I asked this in the M6 forums, but I always seem to get better answers on the east side of the Atlantic ... so ...

My youngest is home on leave from the Airforce. He will begin Air Traffic Controller Training soon (what an officer is doing
taking ATC training, I don't know) and is looking for a realistic ATC simulator.  Not being the hardcore flight sim fanatic
that some of you are, I was hoping that some of you could offer recommendations and descriptions of available ATC simulator
packages.

Can anyone offer any help?

Thx in advance

hmm... I do remember once playing an ATC sim, but it was a while ago and I only had shareware, so I'm pretty sure
there is stuff out, but it's probably not free. Since he's gonna be in the business he probably won't mind paying a few
bucks for a good thing tho...

I remember there was an addon for MS FS, that enabled you to track users on-line and be their operator.

Otherwise this seems a pretty good attempt:
http://users.skynet.be/atcsim/source/about.htm

And this one seem to be top of the line (and only costs $15 at the moment):
http://www.atcsimulator.com/

He'll also probably want to google to find NOTAMS, airport MAPS, weather info and other related stuff. From the times
I was more into this, you could find a lot at http://www.jeppesen.com/ but most of the good stuff there isn't free
either.

Cheers,

Ahh, Doc, you're my friend.

It doesn't matter if there is a cost. If a military officer can't afford to spend some money, I think I'd better check what
he is spending it on (maybe not, he is single and it's none o' my biznez).

Thanks for the links, I'll pass 'em along.

Anyone else?

I believe Doc was thinking of FSNavigator, and addon for MS Flightsim. I last used it for FS2002, but I'm sure they now have
a version out for FS2004. It is quite useful for tracking players ina multiplayer environent, and, as I recall, for tracking
AI aircraft when playing offline. Though, personally, I think the ATC simulation in X-Plane is far better than in any MS
Flightsim (unless you get a serious addon for Flightsim).
You might wish to Google for ATC Simulation software. There are bound to be reviews on some of the better and worse programs
available.
Just my $0.02.

Schimz, you're a one.  What a site! Told you guys on the east side were my best sources. Thank you.

Travis, while even I usually respond with "google is your friend" it often isn't if you don't have the knowledge base on
which to glean decent information from the plethora of sites presented. Sometimes it is better for someone with limited
knowledge in a subject area to ask those with more experience to help shortcut the search; something I have to keep in mind
in areas where I am more expert.

Thanks for the tip on X-plane.  I had discounted it before but need to take another look.

Thanks, guys, so much.

Be aware that X-Plane does not allow you to take the post of an ATC operator, but it does give, what I beleive, to be a more
accurate account of ATC use than FS9 (MSFS2004). The terms used and the way they are used strike me as being more realistic,
though I must admit, I have not heard real ATC chatter for a few years (back when I was on a flight to or from D.C. and
listening in with the provided headphones and the plane's radio). Though Flight Simulator also sounds somewhat realistic, it
is also quite limited (for instance, you cannot declare an emergency without an addon).

Darnit...I'm babbling again...*stops here*

If you're going to make stupid accusations at least spell them correctly. Oh, and by the way, why would you need an
ATC simulator if you were a terrorist? All you need is flightsim and a plane to hijack.

Ah but you can't use an ATC simulator to simulate that. ;)

Don't worry about controlledfarce.  We've seen his postings before.  Poor credibility, hardly entertaining. Though perhaps
he/she/it could comment on the kamikaze issue from a firsthand perspective?

However, a good student looks to all sources to improve his knowledge and skills, not just those in the narrow genre offered
by his instructors.
