Hi guys,

I need an answer on something here.  My dad needed a cheapo computer, so I bought one at auction from my local
county government, a cheap Windows 98 PC, Pentium III, 550mHz, 128MB RAM, etc.  I put a CD-ROM drive in it, got it
all configured, turned it on, and Windows 98 was already installed.  Great!  So I played around with it for a couple of
minutes, just checking it out--looks like a fresh install of Win 98.

All of a sudden....my monitor starts to flicker.  The monitor's power light starts flickering quickly, and I hear a
loud "CLIK CLIK CLIK CLIK CLIK CLIK" sound coming from inside the guts of the monitor.  I see some weird visual artifacts on the screen....then the monitor then shuts off.  It turns on a moment later, but it sounds sick--same CLIK sound.  I realize it's not working at all.  I unplugged the monitor from the computer, but left it plugged into the power strip, just to see if it the same problems would occur.  Yep, same thing--monitor is toast.  Ain't working anymore.

My question is: Could the PC have done something, somehow, to the monitor?  I find it hard to believe that the
monitor, after more than three years of trouble-free operation, suddenly decided to quit on its own, just after I had it plugged into this other computer for a few minutes.  But then again, I've never heard of a PC causing a monitor to fail.  The few minutes it was all working, the Win98 PC seemed to be fine with the monitor....no flickering, no problems.

Any ideas?  I'm going to go buy another monitor tomorrow, but I'm afraid to plug it into this Win98 PC--if the PC actually did something to my old monitor, I'm afraid it'll do something to this new monitor too.

That's wierd. I have no idea, I've never heard of something like that ever happening.

My first job was Tv reparator, that sound make me think about the Very High Power
of 25'000 volts that are applied to the monitors... or perhaps a relays that are used on the old
monitor to switch resolution.

Anyway it seem this monitor is toast ...

Somes years Ago (5-8?) the computer could damage a monitor when you
applied a resolution too high... but I doubt this would happen anymore
with modern Monitor... or perhaps a cheap one ?

A similar thing happened to me. While playing Orbiter (coincidence... or is it?) my monitor just suddenly turned into standby
mode, and I could hear a click click click noise about every 1 and a half seconds, followed by a burning smell. Wasn't that
loud though. The monitor never worked again. Its such a shame though. The monitor I am using now I purchased back in 1997,
and all these years later it still works like a charm. High res too. The 17 inch one that did the funky noise and broke was
only 2 or 3 years old.

OK, thanks guys....Dan, yeah, that clicking sound is exactly like the sound made when the monitor switches
resolutions.  The monitor is definitely toast, no question about that.  I just hope that when I get this new monitor
today, it doesn't do the same thing when I plug this old computer into it.  I guess if it does, at least it's brand new
and can be exchanged, and then I'd know.

Thanks everybody! :)

I Wish I could give you one of the 8 filling my garage now.  They keep littering the curbs here with perfectly fine 'non-
flat' screen monitors every week.  ...Just no C-1541 drives yet.

Maybe you could get one from MegaMichi, your 'Neighbor'.  ;)
HEY!  ...how come she only sent that 'Exclusive' picture of herself to YOU and not KRYtom!?

quotes make everything juicier.

What about me?!? You're not implying anything are you? :doubt:
Why would I particularly want the 'exclusive' picture of Michi anyway?

Sounds like the monitor decided to call it quits. I think it would've done so even if you didn't introduce the new PC
into the equation. Although the other pc's graphics card may have been non-standard or something, making the
monitor bend over backwards.

Hey reekchaa if you ask me Michi and Canadave went on a date and of course it's useful to know what the person
looks like in advance, so you don't bring the flowers to the wrong lady :) Believe me, I should know, I've had my
share of meeting people as a result of chatting :)

Cheers,

lol....boy, I knew I was never going to live this down.........

Nice theory, Doc, but I don't think my wife would've been too happy if I had gone on a "date" with Michi ;)

The "exclusive pic" is a .GIF file of the blueprint designs for the DG4.  Smuggled out of a secret Swiss base
somewhere near Lake Geneva, at great personal risk, they are a detailed look at the next generation of the
DeltaGlider.  Don't tell Dan.

That doesn't change anything, we still want a look. I mean it's got the word 'exclusive' in front of it.

It's no wonder that only a handful of females post on this forum, don't you lot have wives? (Aimed at senior members).

My GF isn't interested in simulators as a rule. The last one she played was Frontier, but that is techically not a
simulator even though space travel was sort of realistic there :)

Heh, the only thing I will get from Michi obviously is a "pawprint", heheh
