I want to be able to edit already made orbiter meshes. Is this possible? If so, how can it be done?

Potentially, yes.  AMSO is an exception, as its meshes are encrypted.   One way to do this is download something like
Mesh2Object (available at http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3101) and convert the mesh to something that can be
exported into your vector graphics program.

A lot of Orbiter developers use Anim8or as it's free (can't beat the price!) and you can import the converted object into
this program.  You'll want to create another object and then "loop cut" it to break your imported mesh into its individual
pieces.

However, if you do this, be aware of copyright restrictions, and to ask permission of the authors you want to hack.  It's
really the polite thing to do.

Mesh Wizard

It allows to export to OBJ with materials file, and to Anim8tor.
