Is it just me, or is the new stock DG unable to lift off the ground under the power of the hover thrusters? I love the VC and
the animated doors and gadgets, but IT CAN'T EVEN PRODUCE  the 9.8 m/s² required to lift off the ground! Maybe I'm a n00b and
the old hover thrusters were totally unrealistic, but since when is any DG realistic?

BTW, great work on the DGIII!

AH. good thing you brought that up,

I too foun that to be a problem.

However, I'm imagining that the stock dg is supposed to be used for hover landings when you've used up some fuel
and it's easier for the thrusters to push your ship around like the little tin canit is.  :)

Yup.. the hover engines get you off the ground, when you're down to something like 30% fuel. The hover engines
currently are only meant to assist you in landing, to reduce vertical speed, landing on moons and such.

I don't know why the engines were downgraded, but I got used to every new release of Orbiter introducing a few
elements to make it tougher to play. :)

I remember I was so frustrated with the downgraded space shuttle and the new NAV radio thingies (IDS, HSI and all
that) in the last realease I actually conteplated staying with the previous release for a while :) But I adapted. I am
Borg. Skills have been assimilated, resistance was futile :)

Cheers,

It does make it harder to assimilate more people into the collective though. :)

I personally hope Dan resists adding that "tweak" to the dg3. ;)

No it doesn't! :)

Rookies just have to practise hovering somewhere else then on Earth. This may turn out to be a plus, because
launching from Earth's surface is almost the hardest thing to do in Orbiter. Rookies find it very hard to do even with
the uber-powered Deltaglider.

Actually it's harder on us, who got spoiled along the way.

A person new to Orbiter, will just take it for granted, that the hover engines just do not lift the DG into air on Earth. :)
And since most stock scenarios feature a DG on Mars, they will just hop over and use that DG for practice, where the
hover engines should perform probably just as they used to on Earth.. no problemo, right? :)

except *I* want my blasted thing to take off on earth.

This literally means the end of my hover takeoffs, which covered about 90% of all of them.

If the dg3 goes the same way, I'm not gonna promise I won't cry. :(

Well, it was supposed to have been done for "more realism" reasons.  I just don't agree.

Taking the Harrier analogy to the DG, the Pegasus engine has the power for the Harrier to lift off on takeoff ... but not
with a full weopons load.  For that the real Harrier needs a short takeoff run.  But the Harrier is not restricted to just
landing vertically.

Not that it really matters though with the multiplicity of DG types available. Just choose one with the specifications that
you want (yeah, I know, there isn't a guide that has that information yet ... but it's being worked on).  Or, alternatively,
you can rewrite configurations and scenarios to alter the conditions you want. Or, yet again alternatively, source codes are
available to write your own ship dlls to perform as you want them.

Endless variety.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO....

When starting Orbiter, if you want your DG's hovers to work on Earth, uncheck the box Complex Flight Model
under the Parameters tab of your launchpad.

This option does not really change the way your spacecraft flies, but changes options specific to the spacecraft that
gives it an "Easy" and a "Hard" way of flying. It will only work if the spacecraft addon is specifically written to support
this option. In the case of the Delta Glider, unchecking this option will allow your hovers to work on Earth.

....so uncheck, and don't worry about being a weak PUNK, if you want verticality   :)

But what of the people like me that want a realistic, AND easy flight model?

Nobody ever thinks of me... :(

Just put the following on the Flight Computer: PRO200SPEC7 then press down on your Numpad and the autopilot will
pick you up off the ground. press 0 on the Numpad and it will Land for you.
