I was wondering about that... I always thought APU stood for "Auxiliary Power Unit" and was used to
start the
engines of an aircraft. Why is it kept running in the DGIII after the generators are online?
And why don't the generators burn fuel?
:wonder:

APUs are auxiliary but not in the sence that they are temporary/secondary units. APU's are spun up by expanding gas
( usualy hydrazine flowing over a catalyst bed ) where their turbines power the hydralic pump. Hydralic pumps as we
know them work fine under normal gravity situations however in the case with fighter jets and space craft the pumps
need a seperate power source, the APU/HPU. The hydraulics are used with the flight controls. This has nothing to do
with electrical power systems.

One other thing. I'm referring to atmosheric flight controls. This means APU's used for the purpose of powering the
hydraulic system would not be used while in space. In the case of Dans DGII or III it seems as if the APU's are
spinning turbines for the electrical power generator. In either case the fuel used in the APU would be spent.

Here is a list of tanks needed for the Space Shuttle;

Main engines:  Ox and Fuel, oxygen/hydrogen tanks(ET)
OMS/RCS:        Ox and Fuel, N2O4/MMH tanks
APU:                 Hydrazine

The DGIII has three propelant types in scenario files. What are they? One is main, one is RCS fuel what's the third
then?

Gene: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh....
Thanks for the enlightenment :)
I'd heard of hydrazine being used aboard the shuttle - I figured it was part of the RCS. Loojs like I had it confused with
MMH.
Do you have any idea why they use hydrazine for the HPU on the shuttle, though? Seems like quite a toxic substance
to be using for power when you've got a bunch of H2 and O2 on board.

As for the DGIII, would I be correct in saying that a more accurate switchboard arrangement would have an APU
button that spins up the generators (then is turned off), along with a HPU switch that powers the hydraulics?

Doc: Really? Maybe it's the hydrazine. Perhaps you can only cycle the DGIII APU a few times before you need to refill it
(on landing, automatically perhaps?)

Don't know. Dan will have to answer that. And go easy on the panel. I'm sure Dan just slapped the buttons on to see
if he can do it, I doubt he was too concerned about realism at this stage. As if DG3 is realistic for now and here :)

Dan certainly didn't care for my idea of limiting the ampage that the DG3 generators could produce, so I'd guess that
anything above that would be considered low priority as well. :)

I mean, try to imagine the DG3's code. Especially working so efficiently as it does. It's probably streamlined and
trimmed down as much as possible to save FPS. Now, imagine someone telling you to whoop in a brake switch and
make it work realistically (hehehe):)

Bah! no orbiter computer calculation can slow down MY computer! Only graphics do. What I really need is a better
graphics card. hoo, then I could run anything. If anybody else's computer slows down, then they need to get rid of their 286. :) And there is NOTHING WRONG WITH WANTING A BRAKE SWITCH! :) a simple button is all I ask. even that parking brake that dan hinted at implementing would be enough for me,. not that behemoth lever!

nontheless. it did interest me. what is it dan? a seKret balancing tank so you don't crash and burn during reentry?

review the hint, and don't search too far :)

"One can't expect to empty the third fuel thanks and remain "ENLIGHTENED"

indice: it was already here in the DGII :wonder:

Strobe are an Orbiter hack, they are in fact thruster with 0 power
but they would not work without fuel so they have a 1 gallon tank.
(that goes never empty because of the 0 power)

I gived the tips many time in the main forum but still at this time not many
add-ons use it... (is there one ?)

MORE of them??? *doc is thinking Xmas edition DG3* hehe

I think the new Vespucci D uses it.. ? (that thing is impossible to fly with all that reactor management)
