What 3D model editor do you use?
I started using anim8 or because it's free. Vinka has tutorials on his web site to use it.

However my son who is very intersted in this stuff claims that "Milkshape 3D" is the one to get. I
want him to learn as much as possible so I want to give him the right tools for learning. He also
claims that Milkshape has the tools to convert mesh for Orbiter. Does anyone have experience
with Milkshape 3d? What do you think?

Dan, I think you used 3dmax to build ships, is that right? Is that the one to get if you spend
money?

Gene,
I didn't used any of anim8tor or milkshape but one thing that I'm almost sure
is that neither is able to convert model into the Orbiter format because it's
a proprietary format...
Owewer I tried both Lightwave and 3dmax, lightwave give better rendering result
but for modelling 3dmax is the best things available....

Well, I'm afraid that in fact, there is a plugin on milkshape website for exporting to orbiter....

My son already downloaded Milkshape and has been learning with it. I guess I'll follow his lead on
this. He say 3dmax is very expensive. Milkshape is $20 and looking better all the time.
Now if I can find the time for learning new things.

It took me a little time to become user-friendly to Lightwave's modeller, but I can create anything
with it, the fastest.
I use Maya professionally for the most part, but Lightwave is still superior for anything I do.

Anim8or is capable of exporting 3ds and then you can use 3ds2msh to convert the 3ds to msh.
