(Note - I posted this info on the official Orbiter forum as well)
Ever want to build a space port right in your own home town? It's actually rather easy to do.
Heres a good site to get your Longtitude and Latitude:
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteerAfter getting the longtitude and latitude of your home town, open your EARTH.CFG file and add a
new base. You need to change NumBases = 35 to NumBases = 36 (the default Earth has 35
bases).
At the bottom of your bases list, add your new base:
Base36 = My Hometown Base +xx.xx -xx.xx
Now, how to enter the Longtitude and Latitude. Well, in Orbiter, instead of using North/South and
East/West readings, it uses + and -. Heres an example:
In my hometown of Woonsocket, RI I went to the site and found the Long/Lat as 41.99988 N,
71.50037 W. So, I entered this as a base in my EARTH.CFG:
Base34 = Woonsocket -71.50 +41.99
The important part is:
North = + and South = -
West = - And East = +
Borrowing the Habanna base, I made a few changes and saved it as WOONSOCKET.CFG (for my
base) and edited my work scenereo to have this:
BEGIN_SHIPS
MR-3:Mercury_Redstone
STATUS Landed Earth
BASE Woonsocket:2
HEADING 90.00
FUEL 1.0
END
END_SHIPS
I happened to use Robs Mercury/Redstone combo because it's easy to fly and gives me a great
view for a few minutes. I can see all the way up the coast to Nova Scotia (sp?) and all the way to
Long Island. Cape Cod and the islands are awesome from 180 km up! And I land safely in the
Atlantic.
(As a kid, I always had a dream of flying a mercury/redstone from my homw town. Orbiter gave me
that.. at least virtually!
