Hi,

Im new to orbiter...I'll admit, a bit out of my relm, as I am an airline pilot, and not used to flying
things OUTSIDE our atmosphere! :)

Anyhoo,  My question is this, I have downloaded the base package and started the sim.  It works
great.  I then downloaded the hirez textures to the main directory like the directions said, but I
dont really see a difference.  Can someone

A. Please walk me thru the CORRECT way to impament the Hi Res stuff.
B. Post some BEFORE and AFTER pics relative to LoRes and HiRes.

Thank you very much

Corey

Hi Corey,

A few things....

1. Just so you know, this is not an "official" Orbiter forum, and is relatively recently implemented.
The "official" forum has been having some problems, and the Orbiter community is in a bit of flux
right now.  This means that if you post a question, you might have to wait longer than 55 minutes
for an answer.  If you're going to try spaceflight, you'll have to learn one word...."patience".
Everything takes a long time! :)

2. The hi res textures go into the "Textures2" subdirectory of whatever directory you installed
Orbiter into.  You can tell the difference by looking at corresponding textures in the "Textures"
subdirectory.  For instance, the "Moon.tex" texture file for the Moon is only a little over 4MB in size
in the Textures folder; its hi-res counterpart is more than 16MB in size in the Textures2 folder.

3. To correctly install the hi-res textures should be pretty straightforward.  If you download the hi-
res textures as a .zip file, and unzip it preserving path assignments to your Orbiter folder, it
should all sort itself automatically into the Textures2 folder.

4. You should see at least SOME difference once you've done all that.  What video card and
system specs are you using?  What did you set Orbiter's video settings to in the inital Launchpad
screen?

Hope this helps,
Dave

Make sure the numbers in the planet's config file are changed, too. :) It opens with Windows
notepad. For example...

; === Configuration file for planet Mars ===
Name = Mars
Module = Vsop87
ErrorLimit = 1e-8

; === Physical Parameters ===
Mass = 6.4185e23
Size = 3.38992e6                   ; mean radius 3.38992e6

; === Rotation Elements ===
SidRotPeriod = 88642.6632          ; 24.622962 hours
Obliquity = 0.4663                 ; obliquity of ecliptic (26.72°)
LAN = 4.5865                       ; longitude of solar transit (262.78°)

; === Atmospheric Parameters ===
AtmPressure0 = 0.61e3
AtmDensity0 = 0.02
AtmAltLimit = 120e3
AtmColor0 = 0.36 0.26 0.13

; === Cloud parameters ===
CloudAlt = 20e3                ; altitude of cloud layer
CloudRotPeriod = 4.506e5       ;
CloudColor0 = 0.86 0.82 0.77

; === Visualisation Parameters ===
MaxPatchResolution = 8         ; highest sphere patch level  <---This Number...8 is high.
MinCloudResolution = 1         ; cloud layer from this resolution
MaxCloudResolution = 8         ; highest cloud resolution level<---This number if you have clouds.
MaxDynamicResolution = 0       ; highest dynamic resolution level

; === Surface Bases ===
NumBases = 1
Base1 = Olympus -135.43 +12.74

Cheers,
      Rolf

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.  Sorry bout' the patience thing.  I guess Im a bit anxious as I have really
taken a liking to this sim.

I see the textures in the Texture2 folder.  But dont really notice a real difference.

Im running a 1 GHz P3 with 384 Meg of RDRAM.  Video card is a GeForce 3 Ti500 64 Meg.

Do I have to delete the textures (or the whole folder for that matter) out of the TEXTURES
FOLDER, so that the sim will look at the textures in TEXTURES2?

Thanks again,

Corey

Hmmmm....don't know then.  You definitely should not delete the normal textures in the Textures
folder; I believe the way it works is that Orbiter first checks the Textures2 directory for hi-res stuff,
and then if it can't find it, goes with the regular textures.

Did you try Rolf's suggestion of looking at the maxresolution in the config files?

If you have, and you see that the hi-res textures are larger than the regular texture files, but you
still don't see a difference, then I don't know what it is :(  Sorry I can't be of more assistance!

Hmm....

Here is my config file:

; === ORBITER Master Configuration File ===

; === Subdirectory locations
ConfigDir = .\Config\
MeshDir = .\Meshes\
TextureDir = .\Textures\
HightexDir = .\Textures2\
ScenarioDir = .\Scenarios\

; === Logical parameters ===
FlightModel = 1
UnlimitedFuel = FALSE
InstrumentUpdateInterval = 1
PanelScale = 1
PanelScrollSpeed = 300
NumStar = 3000
StartPaused = FALSE

; === Visual parameters ===
AmbientLevel = 8
EnableShadows = TRUE
EnableSunGlare = TRUE
EnableClouds = TRUE
EnableNightlights = TRUE
EnableWaterReflection = TRUE
EnableHorizonHaze = TRUE
EnableSpecularReflection = TRUE
MFDTransparent = TRUE
PlanetPatchRes = 1
StarBrightness = 1
NightlightBrightness = 0.5
ConstellationCol = 0.3 0.3 0.3

; === Joystick parameters ===
JoystickIndex = 1
JoystickThrottleSaturation = 9500
JoystickDeadzone = 2500

; === Font parameters ===
DialogFont_Scale = 1
DialogFont1_Face = Arial

; === Device settings ===
DeviceForceEnum = TRUE
DeviceIndex = 2 ; do not edit manually
ModeIndex = 27 ; do not edit manually
Fullscreen = TRUE
Stereo = FALSE
WindowWidth = 640
WindowHeight = 480

I see the 8 for res, but nothing for clouds (numarically)

Anyway, if anyone can show me a couple of PICS of the actual DIFFERENCE between lo and hi rez
maybe that will help.  From the pics Ive seen at the gallery, mine dont look near as good and Im at
1600x1200 rez.

Thanks for all your input everyone, hopefully I can figure this out :)

Corey

The config numbers for the planets are in the actual planet config file... Venus.cfg for example.
Res numbers are near the bottom. Not all have clouds. Many have had clouds added by field
conversion so to speak. Mars for example comes without clouds but many folks simply make and
add their own. In the sdk there's a tool for making new clouds/planet textures btw...
I have a picture of Mars in the new hi-res textures in the thread marked Hi res Mars textures by
Seth...or look here for a variety of hi-resolution screen shots:
