I did a search for this here to see if it had been defined, and I didn't really find anything explaning it.

so...

What does the auto air intake do? What is it's purpose, and what effect does it have?

It lower consumption of fuel...
in automatic it open when the dynamicall pressure is sufficient but only on earth.
