Hi, I had a couple of questions about reentry in DG III.
first, it says in the DG II manual:
6- Wait until the distance to Cape Canaveral shows "16.55M" on the Map MFD.
7- Fire main engines until your Periapsis (PeD) shows exactly "6.400M".
in step six is it 16.55M after I pass over Cape Canaveral, or 16.55M before?
also, whenever I reenter, I let all the controls alove, and I still burn up
my reentry angel is never more than 1.1, like it shows in the manual, and my speed is about the same.
if anyone could answer these questions, I would appreciate it. This is how I feel about this

Johnc,
I have the same problem, have dumped fuel, etc., but have only survived 10% of my re-entry
attempts.
I try to never sweat the petty things, but I ALWAYS try to pet (gently
) the sweaty things. All
girls like that.

The reentry doesn't work the same than in manual:
Deorbit as in manual
at 120km fire pro104spec40
Don't touch anything until your at low speed, (<mach 2?)
Reentry will be reworked in the meaning time.

Dear John,
I can only answer you the first question and that is reentry distance.
It's 16.55 m before you get to Cape Canaveral not after you passed it and as a matter of fact it
would be more or less 16.35 m.
For the second part, for some reason that I don't understand yet, I don't make it every time.
It seems that the sooner you undock from Mir the slower you enter the atmosphere.
Good luck and If you figure out the second problem, let me know.
Peace.

I have finally got around to loading the new Orbiter and the DGIII current Alpha.
I too was having a problem with re-entry. But I have tried different ways to stretch the first phase
of the re-entry in such a way where you never exceed 330 tail heat.
I set it up the same way every time, whether undocking from Mir or ISS. It requires a Plane change
among other things. It uses The DGIII onboard re-entry program in a different way and requires
AOA changes along the way.
It has worked for me 100% of the time without fail.
I will recreate a Re-Entry complete with detailed instructions and a point form checklist of the set
up. And I will include pics of how it should look both on the panels and outside.
Need a couple of days to put it together. I should have it by the weekend for you. :D

When during re-entry try to roll the orbiter 90 degrees left and/or right when when you pitch
above 0 degrees. Rolling should help relieve some of the built up energy from under the craft
creating lift. If I am not mistaken the actual orbiter does the same thing, to relieve built up energy
from underneath.

I finally made it right with the reentry.
When starting from Mir with DG III Rev2 scenario, simply undock over Africa and watch the beautiful
sunrise over the red sea. Once 60 m away from Mir press "K" to lock the nosecone and press "Retrograde".
Target Cape Canaveral on the "Map Mfd" and set "Com/nav" to the right frequencies (112.70/134.20).
Set "deorbiting display (disp 2) and target Cape Canaveral in the "Reentry MFD".
Your altitude should be 300 Km more or less, do the deorbiting burn when distance on "Map MFD" is -1800M.
Watch your reentry angle prediction on "disp 2" and stop when your angle is 0.70° and Ped 6429-6432.
Watch for your weight on the HUD (less than 19 tonnes) and jett some if necessary.
Wait 'til you are over the East coast of Australia and switch to "Reentry MFD" and use Hover burn to change your
plane and wait 'til the spot is in the middle (reentry Mfd). Once aligned with KSC wait 'til altitude is 120 km and then
turn prograde and then press "ATM Auto". Press "Pro104spec40" and turn on "HSI MFD" and "Disp 3"
Don't forget "Hydraulic pressure on" before you land.
That's it. It works 100 %.

Hi Chris,
couple of questions:
"Map MFD" is -1800M?"
I don't dig
you mean when the target is 18 thousand km downrange?
"Reentry MFD"
What MFD are you referring to? DG3's computer display or some third-party MFD and if so, can you please tell me
where to get it?
I could sure use something like that.
Tnx,

Being the link machine that i am i have found the site with it on:
http://www.orbithangar.com/atlas/
From the main page go to 'Utilities' on the left hand menu, then when that is loaded click on 'MFDs' on the top menu.
Then just scroll down. (It is there).
It's is only a beta as far as i can see, but it meets your requirements.

Thanks Krytom,
I am going to test the thingy tonight. I also checked out the Interplanetary MFD. Any experience with that. It looks
awesome! Basically coveres all my needs
that I outlined in another thread.
*shaking with anticipation*
