I cannot seem to successfully reenter the atmosphere with the DG3.
I burn up every time.
Even with the reentry autopilot, the temp just increases and I burn up.
What am I doing wrong??
I start the "docked at MIR" scenario.
I undock, close the nose cone, turn retrograde, and burn until Ped is ~5.400.
I then turn prograde and engage the reentry autopilot for 40 deg AOA.
I sit back and watch.
As I enter the atmosphere, the hull temp shoots up and I burn up.
This also happens at other AOAs.
Am I missing something?
To reduce temp, should you increase AOA or decrease AOA?
Please Help,
Keith

Try to set PED to 6600, glide slope must be ~1.1 - 1.2...
and simply don't touch nothing until you are in safe speed and altitude... about at 38000 mt.
with this settings i have a 80% successful reentries...
Maybe should be useful a little tutorial about reentry procedures, if some expert guy can effort
this....
Good Luck!

Just tried it and got down safe. PED to 6600, then reentry program
Ok tail got a lil warm , around 320°C, but no big deal.
If i remember right the DGIII has a weight-limit of 20t ( or 25t). please dont nail me to
this number. So a topped-off DGIII wont be able to do a reentry.
for this try i had 16t.
Might be a missing piece.
Andy :-)

If you look on HUD display 5 it tells you the limits of the DGIII.
The maximum weight is 19t, just to add.
And the DGII manual has a diagram and instrutions for a safe re-entry.

P.S.I changed it for you. (Ignore this everybody it is just something for me.)

Thanks to all.
I made it fine.
I was comming in too steep.
How do you know your weight?
Is it displayed somewhere or do you have to calculate it based on fuel load, etc.
Thanks,
Keith

On one of the Hud displays it has the weight in killograms.
Just wait for it to go below 19000 kg, then you can make and attempted reentry.

how are you guys having any success with a PED of 6.600m? The surface is at 6.371, and
atmospheric density pressure (DNP) only starts reading at 6.500 or so, so your PED is like 230kms
above the surface, and still 100kms above entry interface. Did you mean 6.500? Or a Wwaaaaay
steeper 5.600? or what. I cant figure out how you are reentering like that.

My fault
, took wrong number, PED was actually 6200 or so
sorry about that

I usually try to keep it simple (like me)
I wait until I'm on the other side of the planet (longitude to target is at maximum) and then do a
reverse burn until my Perigree Altitude is around 40KM (thank you so much for putting that in a HUD
Dan).
I'm still looking for the sweet spot that drops me into navigable flight right on top of the target
base, but my re-entry angles are around 0.7 deg and I don't get too much heat.
another trick is that heat happens becasue your forcing yourself into deeper atmosphere (I think the
re-entry aerodynamics are stuffed for DG under the new Orbiter Dan) so I fire the engines to cut my
decent rate, and in some cases ascend in an aerobraking manouvre
