Hi Dan,

Just a short note to update you on our NASSAC program mission for June 26-28.. June 26 will be
the final traing day for the crew and mission control. All systems are go for a 8:22 launch from
Cape Canaveral on Friday June 27th. The flight plan calls for an RINC AN Normal (-) burn and two
other burns to adjust the orbit for ISS intercept at 12:30 PM Eastern Standard Time in the U.S. I
am taking four others on the flight and they all have duties to perform. Some will be watching the
life support systems. We are pumping compressed air into the cabin through a filer that will have
to be monitored. The pressures will also have to be moniroted and adjusted to maintain normal
atopheric presure readings. The flight surgeon will monitor the readouts from the DGII.

We ahve linked 8 other computers to the network with VMC and other kids will be monitoring the
flight and be in constant radio contact with the DGII. The mission control kids have a list of 25
questions that they must answer along the way using the telemetry information on their monitors.
They will also perfom some script commands to test the Telemetry ocntrol of DGII's main engines,
RCS engines, MFD and HUD screens. The kids are going to stay on board through the night, taking
shifts to watch the systems. We are doing this mission in real time. THe return is planned for June
28th at about 12:00 PM.

The kids are excited and love the DGII. I will make a full report after the mission and let you know
how things went. Thanks again for the DGII and your hard work to make it more realistic.  I wish
you could share in this directly but I just did not have the time to work out the logistics. Send me
your mailing address in an E-Mail and I will mail you a video tape of the mission. We are recoding
everyting we can.

Once the video uploaded on my site you can than post here
and give the link to your video so everyone can watch them.
(and even the family of the child)

Howewer I'm affraid I cannot hold them for several month
(free space worry)  but for some week there is no problem.

I'll keep you updated about this

Right on Dan,

The "Spirit I" mission was a complete success. The DGII glider performed perfectly. We lifted off at
exactly 8:22:30 AM from KFC and arrived at the ISS seven hours latter after making our RINC
correction burn and three transitional burns to the ISS. We spent a total of 28 hours in the DGII
and landed at the Cape at about 11:30 Saturday morning.
I know I told you before how much I appreciated your work, but I have  to tell you that to a six
year old and three, nine year old boys the added realism made a BIG difference. When they saw
their names in the computer along with their vitals, they got the message, "failure is not an
option".  And to all those that participated in the VMC part or the support program as well.
We had a little scare on our reentry when I had to shut down the computer because we were
overshooting the landing site. I let the nose down a little too much and the warning sound went
off concerning G- Forces when I recovered. Well, we had the families of these little guys watching
on close circuit TV the Rentry data Screen with full sound. They told me latter how real it was, and
how thye felt a moment of panic knowing their little ones were on board. All I can say Dan is that
you, along with  Martin and others  have done a great job and I look forward to taking many more
young dreamers into space for the first time.
We had many little addons like compressed air with gauges, Co2 filters that had to be changed, a
docking module that had to be pressurized and a window with a thick half rounded glass that
gave one the impression that they were looking down on earth. You will not believe the pictures
from that window. We also had a floating pen that floated once we reached orbit just to remind us
that in space things float.

Thanks for the free space to upload the Videos. We recorded the whole thing from beginning to
end. I will review the tapes on Monday and select some segments to send to you.

In the future, if I have my way, we are going to build a life size model of the DGII simulator. What
we are using now is only a proto type of things to come.

Wow......

That sounds absolutely awesome.  Speaking as a kid who never grew up, and always wanted to
do something like you described your kids doing but never got the chance, I hope you'll be able to
duplicate this type of mission for kids for years to come.

This also raises the point of being able to have emergencies crop up in the DG2.  For instance, it
would've been interesting for the kids to have a sudden emergency at 3am---maybe not too
serious, but still something to wake them up a bit :)

How did you do the addons, John?

Good luck, and I can't wait to see the videos!!

Cheers,
Dave Klein

I could not say better than dave :)

Some care about the detail as the pen floating amazed me
you have done a great work John, I bet the child where happy.

I'm still looking to open a space for you john I have only 9mo
left on http (on 80 mo) but I have also 80 mo of FTP that are empty
(I must find a way to give you a personnalised access to upload
them)

Hi Dave,

The addons that I talked about in the simulator that we built are hands on. For the compressed air
I simply ran a compressed air line, into a regulator that the kids had to adjust to maintain 14.5
PSA. The main line runs into a tree with two pressure guages and three valves to adjust. I also
hooked up a low pressure vacuum gauge to act as the air lock indicator. The air lock had to be
pressurized before they could open it up and the vacuum gauge had to read a postive 1
atmosphere before they could unbolt the door and go into the airlock to take a look out the
window. The air lines ran into a filter (charcoal/fiber water filter) that the the kids had to change
before returning. The air is then pumped through clear 3/16 air lines to the ceiling of the simulator.
The hissing sound adds another realism factor for the senses. As for the floating pin, I simply
connected a threaded crank to a very slow moving motor, .15 rpm per minute. On the end of the
crank I attached a fender washer that would freely rotate on the shaft. I drilled a small hole on
the edge of the washer and ran very light fishing string from the washer to the floating ink pen. I
turn the motor on when we reach orbit and very slowly the pen begins to fall and rotate (from the
moving air) and the effect is quite convincing especially in low light. When the kids saw it they
were amazed. I then had them think about how it could be done. The window was a half round
theater lense from a spot light that slightly magnifies the image of the 19 inch monitor and gives it
depth.  I am working on getting the pictures together.
I know how you feel about "always wanting to do something like that when you were a kid but
never got the chance", i can relate. Because that is partly why I did it for these young guys. As for
repeating it we plan on doing it many times over. The simulator is ready to go but we need to
work on getting the next team ready. I personnally found the entire mission a great challenge
from beginning to end. And when we touched down on the center line at KFC I fullfulled a
childhood dream. It was an awsome and great feeling of accomplishment.   And the response from
those that watched it was overwelmingly positive as well. They also felt like they part of real
space flight.

(I also always dreamed about a simulator... the absolute
dream  for me is a moving simulator in 3 axes)

Here the amazing Job John have done for the child camp.

I uploaded some pictures but had some problems with the video, I think I am going to have to
condense the video files before I can upload them.. For now you can see some stills that I
uploaded and I will get back to you when I redo the video files. I have over 3gb of video to select
from. I will upload launch, docking, reentry and EV highlights only.

I was wondering why they posted those crap here... and finally found the answer: Google rank

In google you gain rank when a lot of site have link that point on yours..
So while removing the url and posting their e-mail we just piss them ;)

Dan they came from a thread from "john" almost three years ago. This is a case that speaks for time expiring posts.

Mauiman, did you not look at the date of the thread when you bumped the topic? Usually if someone posts an image it might be
available for only a couple of weeks, a couple of months at the most.
