Yeah same here. I don't understand why some pings would get back (albeit slow), but when you go to access the site it won't
even load at all. Well, often times I can load the main forum but not the threads.

Bottom line, the forums need to be switched from somewhere other than M6.net. Looking at the fact I've seen reports from
last year of forum shortages happening, and the fact this time it's been going on for almost a week, I don't think the
forum will ever be moved. Such a shame, really. If I could find Martin's damn email, I'd try to contact him about the problem.

Well, high latency can cause connection problems, plain and simple. I don't get why we can get the forum and not the
threads though, and we're not only dealing with latency issues here because I've found the forum inaccessible at
times when the latency was quite low.

As far as switching hosting providers, it's been said a thousand times before: Martin uses M6 because they offered
him free hosting. Unless you can convince some more reliable company to offer him free hosting, we're stuck. Caveat
freebius captor. (Let the freebie taker beware).

The only problem is if he uses buyware then it will come out of his pocket, and if we can find a solution to that we can
start a fund but some people would not contribute to it.

Well, the fact that M6.net has offered him free hosting (And it looks like there's no free plan on their site; he's getting a
paid plan for free) means that we can look until we're blue in the face and won't find a free hosting plan that can compete.
I use, however, a site which offers a free plan that's pretty nice at http://50webs.com/ (I use them for my Garrysmod game
server page; I like them very much) but I don't think their free plan offers ASP or PHP or whatever is needed for the forum.

Isn't the main orbiter site hosted on the University's site? surely he could convince someone to use another server for the
forum?

I dunno, you can't expect to design a game for free, and then not have one expense whatsoever. If you look at 50 web's
"webmaster" plan for 5 bucks a month, it includes ASP and PHP etc... And he couldn't afford 5 bucks a month between donations and
out-of-pocket? 50 webs is the best site offering a free plan I've found. No bandwidth limit either! (for the free plan).

Whatever the case I think he needs to change servers. Even though it might be a big step it would be good for
everybody else.

Something just hit me like a ton of flying bricks (pun intended):

http://invisionfree.com/

I used to host a graphics design board using InvisionFree and it was absolutely awesome. Spectacular uptime, loading times
were great, customizable themes and tons of other bells & whistles. And a search that WORKS!

If i remember correctly, the only downside was it's add supported unless you pay a fee they place like one google banner ad
on the page. Seriously, not really that big of an issue -- most people have adblock anyway (if they're smart they do). But
like I said, you can't ever expect to not spend one dime... and Martin, as much as I like the guy, deserves to have a banner ad on the page if he doesn't want to spend a dime on server hosting.

*EDIT* Over at http://www.freeforums.org/ they offer free PhpBB forum hosting, and of course PhpBB is pretty reliable. Only downside is now freeforums.org is now implementing ads because They've grown so much. Similar to InvisionFree, you can pay a fee to remove ads. It's a shame, freeforums didn't have ads till this month.

You see, there's plenty of options available -- 5 bucks a month for hosting, or if you don't want adds a small fee. The fact that Martin won't change from M6.net is sad. Plenty of options out there.

*EDIT 2* Another site, http://www.forumotion.com/ , offers free PhpBB hosting, and no ads either! I found these last two links at http://www.phpbb.com/ . There's even http://ikonboard.com/ which i heard is also good. The only one that's not free is vBulletin. Heh.

Please be advised that the Orbiter forum at orbit.m6.net is experiencing technical difficulties and may not be
accessible.
You can find other Orbiter-related forums on the web, such as orbiter.dansteph.com, Meadville Space Center, or
www.avsim.com.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Martin.

Well, well, well. Never seen that before. Looks like it could be down for quite a while.

Martin didn't even mention one of the best newer forums, Orbiter-Forum.com: http://orbiter-forum.com/forum/index.php

They have a reall nice and feature-rich forum, I think I'm going to be there for a while.

Still down. From what goes around in moderator circles, it will suffer from problems for a longer period of time, thanks to
the  Orbiter site and forum getting promoted by Yahoo Games since the last days.

Das klingt ein bisschen komisch auf Englisch. Der Ausdruck, "the last days," bezieht sich auf die Christliche
Apokalypse. Es ist besser "the last few days" zu sagen. Auch, "since" kann man nur sagen mit eine Zeit das vorbei
ist. Man kann "since 2001" sagen, aber nicht "since 2008." 2008 und "the last few days" sind noch nicht vorbei. Man
muss "For/during the last few days," und "since the beginning of 2008" sagen.

Ich glaube, dass ich etwas hier gelernt habe. Auf deutsch, soll ich "seit die letzte Tage" sagen, und nicht "für die letze
einige Tage." Gelt?

Linguofreak, if you're quoting something in English, then why are you replying in German? Most of us here won't know what
you're talking about...

He corrected (correctly) my English, as I did some large errors in my last post. He is right about it, and I think its a good
example to show once and for all that I am no native English speaker. ;)

But I also have the rule: Who discoveres an error in my posts, may keep it.

Urwumpe, you spelled "discovers" with an extra e, does that mean I can keep the 'e' and use it in one of my own words?
Could be useful if that particular letter of my keyboard breaks :D

Ok, I'll run away now!
