That's a complete mystery of it's own. Anyone have any alternate feasable suggestions for Radu and Martin?
That'd depend on how much space they need and how much traffic they get.

The server on which the forum is hosted on has run of ouf disk space.

No as the images are not hosted on the forum server. Hopefully it will be fixed pretty soon.

I don't undestand why they don't create an archive of older threads on a different server? No need to have so many
outdated threads on the current one.

It isn't the number of threads that are the problem -- each time so far it has been the Oracle log files that had filled
up the disk (the log files aren't necessary for the forum to work, btw).  The amount of disk space required by the
threads
really isn't much -- I would guess several gigabytes at most.

The root of this recurring problem is that the network monkeys at M6 don't know enough to write a cron job to clean
up the old Oracle log files, and so the disk keeps filling up and crashing the forum until someone at M6 gets around to
manually deleting the old log files, which can take up to a week.  Then the forum runs a few weeks until the disk fills
up again, and so the cycle repeats...  Elegant, eh?

Are the log files generated by the forum software, or by the server running the forums? If they're created by the
forum and are not critical then it should be a simple matter of turning that function off.

Image the worst web hosting experience you could ever possible have. Now multiply that by 100 and you'll come close to
m6's service. I had problems from the start. I never got a welcome email so I had not idea how to log in. Believe it or not,
I called in and got someone, they halped me, but the problem reapeaired the next time. I could only log in to the cpanel
every otheer time as I got many errors. MySQL didn't work properly, the cpanel, when you can get in, is absolutly
horrible--not user friendly at all. I tried to call again for support and got an answering service. I left numerous messages,
sent multiple emails, left many service requests in the cpanel, all to no avail. I cancelled the service and am trying to get
my money back based on the 30 day money back gurantee. I looks like I will have to file a complaint with the credit card
company to get my money back.

I just wanted to mention that, in all means, M6.net is
nothing but a bunch of crap. I've been in computer programming
business for over 15 years and I'm not afraid to say that they offer the worst services and support I've seen so far.

Quote
The way they work is a scam , nothing works in their control panel and they dont reply to e-mails , the make a small
amount by many that they fall in the trap until they cancel for new suckers to subscribe .

'Nuff said. :badfinger:

Is it just an Oracle thing? My servers fill up with huge archived statistics temp files all the time, and it's a simple
matter of going in and deleting them, either via ftp, or cpanel file manager, if you like. I don't understand an unstable
cpanel, it has to be something in the actual forum board software.

What I find most amusing is the little quotebox on their main page (www.m6.net) If you actually read the quotes they have on
there it seems like almost all of them are actually taken from tech support emails and are along the lines of "wow, it works
now, thanks", not the expected "great hosting, thanks".
A subtle bit of manipulation by m6 there, I think - and all it does is show how badly they suck. Even I can tell they're bad,
an I know absolutely nothing about web hosting :)

As Martin would probably have to pay for it, getting a new webhosting with the same or more diskspace and especially
bandwidth is gonna be problematic financially. Good webhosting with lots of diskspace and lost of bandwith cost alot of money :(

I have emailed Martin about the forum problem. He said that he has contacted M6 but probably won't get a reply until
Monday.

Yes, perform regular maintenance on the site, like deleting or backing up the data transfer log files, which can grow
into gigabytes in a very short time and overrun the available disk space, which is probably what happed this time.

It is what happened. But Radu has lost all write access to the forum server for some weired reason which makes him
unable to perform even simple tasks as regular maintenance to delete useless files. I notified him about it last Friday
when the problem first showed up.

Ironically enough, the Orbiter forum is normally working by now. I've noticed that during the last two blackouts (3 if
including this one) that they inevitably happen on a weekend or close to it, and that the forum is back by Sunday
evening local time.

Not anymore - as of now!

We choose to run Oribiter sims, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

EDIT: Now I'm getting even different things happening every time I try.

no need for sticky it's "upped" frequently... :)

I doubt this thread will ever leave page 1 unless they use a new webhost.

I get "The connection was reset", but that's because I use Firefox.

Let me see if I can put each of these smileys in the context of M6 and why they seem to hate us.

:)  -  M6 smiling at us.

:(  -  Us.

;)  -  Them telling us they will fix it.

8)  -  What they are doing instead of fixing it.

  -  Them partying thinking they have done a job well done.

:drink:  -  What they are doing when they should be fixing the problem.

8o  -  Our astonishment when the forums are back up in three weeks.

:top:  -  Exactly opposite of what we think of M6.

  -   Exactly what we think of M6.

:???:  -  The look on M6's face when faced with a problem.

:grrr:  -  Us at M6.

:turning:  -  M6 laughing at us.

:hot:  -  Hopefully, M6's fate.

:pfff:  -  What M6 thinks of their customers.

:friend:  -  Them partying... drunk... again.

:drunk:  -  M6.

:worry:  -  Us yelling at M6.

:google:  -  Use this to find a better service than M6.

  -  Us when M6 takes the forums away.

:help:  -  Us talking to M6.

:baaa:  -  I am stumped on this one.

:stupid:  -  M6.

:off:  -  What M6 says when there is a problem.

:badlink:  -  M6's service.

:gift:  -  Yeah, right.

:wonder:  -  Us wondering where the forums went.

  -  What M6 does when there is a problem.

  -  As in up yours, M6.

:wc:  -  M6 is full of crap.

:music:  -  Again, M6 goofing off.

:doubt:  -  "There is no problem!" says M6 (but there is).

  -  Us at M6.

  -  Upset the forums are down.

:wall:  -  Upset with M6's service.

:fool:  -  M6 is the fool.

:applause:  -   What we will never do to M6.

:bug:  -  Too easy.

:sunk:  -  What happened to M6's service?

:flower:  -  Yeah, right.

:wor:  -  What M6 thinks of their customers.

  -  I am sick of M6.

  -  No, just no.

  -  LOL at all this stuff I am saying about M6.

:badfinger:  -  Once again, too easy.

  -  What M6 would be if they were dental technicians.

:bave:  -  M6 is distracted once again.

:damn:  -  Damn you M6!

:prout:  -  M6 at us.

:blbl:  -  M6 at us.

:ptdr:  -  M6 at us.

:sage:  -  What I will look like when the forums are back up.

:trucdeouf:  -  All right, M6.

  -  OMG! The forums are back up (not really).

:prof:  -  This is what a person with intelligence looks like, M6.

:siffle:  -  Any day, M6.

Allright, I had nothing better to do!
