Sorry ive had a bit to drink :drunk: but bear with me....

Who here would give anything to go back in time and take the role of say..... Jim Lovell, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, etc
and fly the Mercury 7, Gemini, Apollo or even the STS missions of today?

I personally would give anything to spend just one day in space, i have just been watching Apollo 13 it is a great movie, one
of my favorites, even though it was a "sucsessful failure" i would love to be there.

Sure orbiter is a fantastic sim, but sims can only take you so far, the real thing would just be AWESOME!!!

And on a off topic note, i sucsessfully managed to launch 2 DGIII's simultaneously into orbit and dock!!

WOO HOO to me!!!!  :applause:   :applause:   :applause:

Coz im a rocketman!! Burnin up the fumes up here, alone!

I would give my left ______ (you fill in the blank) to go into space for real. If we ever start colonizing other worlds in my
lifetime (unlikely, but not impossible), I will be first to go.

Kind regards,

tritoch - go get it and watch it.  You won't be disappointed.  One of the best space movies ever made IMHO.

Another favorite of mine is Space Cowboys.  Not only is it a good story, but they did it right.  Whoever wrote the
dialogue for the shuttle launch procedures really did their homework.  I am impressed each time I watch it at how
close it sounds to listening to an actual shuttle launch.

Then when I watch Armageddon I just cringe at the "unrealism."  (Although I did realize recently that they elected to
stop at what was apparently supposed to be Mir, on the way to do the gravity assist maneuver around the moon.
Since Mir is (was) in a very close relative orbital plane with the Moon, it would make such a perfect "stopping point"
on the way.

I think they COMPLETELY tried to get Apollo 13 as accurate as possible. At a JSC tour, they said that because in the
pics they had there was a donut box one of the mission control boxes, Ron Howard had someone run across the
street to get a box and he positioned it exactly as it was before. Unusual realism...
The CO2 scrubber looks very accurate compared to the model I've seen at JSC too.
They also said that the mission control guys said the mission control center was 99% accurate.

Incorrect. You probably got this from Orbiter. In Orbiter Mir was moved from it's historical 51.6° inclined orbit to a
28.5° inclined orbit.

Actually that is a misconception: Mir is only close to the lunar orbital plane in orbiter. Its intentionally changed to this
orbit from its real position into something close to the ecliptic to be a easier waypoint for interplanetary missions.

The real Mir orbit was very similar to the ISS orbit, it only differed in LAN, but not in the other parameters.

Soyuz T-15 was the first crew to visit Mir, and the only spacecraft in history to dock on two space stations (Mir and Salyut
7) in the same mission (Some shuttle orbiters also achieved docking to Mir and ISS, but during different missions).

The mission started with Soyuz T-15 docking to the Mir base block, and the crew activating the space station module for
manned operations. Because of some accidents on Salyut 7, the station was long abandoned, but many interesting   experiments
had been left behind on it by the last crew, which had to leave Salyut 7 with a medical emergency. One of these experiments
required a EVA on the Salyut 7 hull (building and welding structures in space - an experiment needed for the Mir station)

As the fuel on a Soyuz is (still) very limited, all three spacecraft had to perform a very complicated dance in orbit, with
ground control in a way passing the soyuz first from Mir to Salyut 7 and later do the same maneuver in the opposite direction
for returning to Mir. While Salyut slowly decayed, Mir used its thrusters to lower and raise its orbit to bring the Soyuz
spacecraft as near as possible to Salyut 7 (eg: undocking happened 2000 km away from Salyut 7, the Soyuz spacecraft only
travelled 125 km relative to Mir, Mir passed Salyut 7 25 km away during the maneuver).

Three docking maneuvers also did not happen often in history, i think only one Gemini mission did it also.

As additional highlight, the first unmanned Soyuz TM-1 spacecraft docked to Mir while Soyuz T-15 was working for 50 days on
Salyut 7. After these 50 days, Soyuz T-15 brought over 350 kg experiments and instruments from Salyut 7 to Mir.
