Why was dansteph.com down for two days?

The download of Orbiter that was available on my site as a mirror
exploded my allowed bandwidth that passed from 160GO to 440GO
the last month (Orbiter was downloaded 12'000 time)

Without any warning mail OVH the ISP simply cut the access to the site.
after two day mail and phone the site is back.

I would say they don't care a f... (correct expression ? ) dansteph is only one of the thousand site
they have and it's not even a big one. (middle)

I must say also that somes big site with online selling experienced also the "OVH method"
when you exceed bandwith (so called "instant death")  imagine your online sales and how
you feel with a site down during two or more day.

Dan, I reccommend you taking Orbiter itself off of your site to prevent this from happening again. The others can
easily take up the slack.

No fee, but no mail and "instant death" I do not understand their politic about that.
One small warning mail and they saved their bandwidth. (and my site)
The last mail I sent to them I suggested that also while I saw many rant on usenet
about others people experiencing OVH's instant death politic.

Already done else this site would be still down.
I see that you run your hown server, but dansteph.com sustained 12'846 in 23 days
(counter blocked on that number the 23th) =558 per day.
Are you certain that nobody will jump on you if your connection send 400GB per month ?
Sometime we get suprised by our provider's notion of "unlimited"  
(for recall internet introduced past years the new concept of "limited  unlimited" )

The next step for dansteph.com would be to buy a dedicated server but the first price are
at 1500 euro per years. Anyway as you said Orbiter download isn't endangered if
dansteph.com doesn't have it.

Well, I for one had alread suspected that you would have had problems if you had exceeded a certain amount..

I liked your idea of going very close to their limit every month but not quite going over. being that ornery is  quite
pleasing. though it would only work if you knew it pissed them off. assuming it did wouln;t be worth the effort.

Dan, though I'd enjoy testing my ISP to see about their notion of "unlimited" bandwidth, I have other issues I must deal with
ATM. Having to move again is a PITA and one of two things will happen to my site: 1) Doc and I will move it to Doc's server
(preferred) or 2) It will simply go down for an undetermined period of time and I will probably find it replaced by the time
I get things settled (definitely not preferred).
