Very cool SDL!

As to the old OSN site and forum, I should have them up and running again in a few hours. The site itself is for reference
purposes (and downloads) only. The forum can be used again.

I really wish you guys would start using the OSN site that Doc is hosting. If you guys really don't like the forum he
has over there, you can still use the one I run. Eventually, I hope to get it moved over to Doc's server and functioning
correctly. Only problem with that is the database for the OSN site and the forum will not work together, as with the old one. :(

I'm likely to be around less and less as time progresses, as I'm hoping to get a job here in the next few weeks. I'll still
be able to run the site/forum and such, jist less likely to be posting here constantly...

Actually the forum itself is not a lot different from Dan's. It's just that posts are called comments and the design is a
bit clumsy. Otherwise it's a flat expanded list of posts, just like Dan's. I've removed the subject line, so it'll be easier
to post now.

On the other hand, Travis's forum is a lot more user friendly, and I vote Travis keeps running his forum as the official
OSN forum and I'll run the site. Especially since he put a lot of effort into it already. I'll reserve some time over the
weekend to get the site as finalized as possible. I'm currently experimenting with a new theme, that seems to be well suited for large monitors at high resolutions.

Cheers,
Janez

Hi Doc.
Yes, that's the thing the program is going to do.
I will have OSN_Sol and OSN_[planets], then it will read scenario parts and plot them into one (it's important that it refers
to planets correctly).
Maybe someone could make some kind of MFD showing who does the space you are in belongs to? Or maybe even a map?
Yes, it's a standalone app.

Here is an example of an .osn file:
Quote
:::: General info
NAME She'Da'Lier Space Enterprise
AUTH She'Da'Lier

:::: Set source folder
FLDR SDL

:::: Copy base's files
FSRC TestBase1.cfg
FTGT Config\SDL\TestBase1.cfg
:::: Set planet/moon on which base will be placed
BPLT Earth
:::: BASE string commands adding base line (exact string after BASE)
BASE SDL\TestBase1: +10.2 -87

:::: Copy ship files - FSRC sets source file, FTGT sets target file and copys the file
FSRC TestShip.cfg
FTGT Config\TestShip.cfg

FSRC TestShip.dll
FTGT Modules\TestShip.dll

:::: Scenario part file
SCEN Scenario

REMS This is test faction file

Hm, neat. Wish we could have an online PHP version. PHP is not unlike C++ but still, MySQL is a whole new ballpark :)

About spaces I was thinking of simple rule:
- planetary claims are equal to SOI of the planet. When you are out of the sphere of influence, you are
in "international space" :)
- same for moons
- there are exceptions for nations like Outer Planetary Alliance, which appears to be an alliance of many planetary
bodies and their SOIs.. Now if the space between those SOIs belongs to OPA is a somewhat vague issue. If it IS,
then noone can pass from Mars to Pluto or farther without violating OPA's space.. And if it's not, then opa is a bunch
of SOI bubbles, held together by a treaty :)
- there are also exceptions, such as military staging areas, or planetary blockades (you may be out of the SOI, but
you still have the planet surrounded) - so are you tresspassing or not? :)

About the map. Was it Krytom that volunteered something like that? My system of "web roles" also foresees a role
for one of you, that will include maintaining an OSN property claims map. :) I was going to prepare some kind of
background, with the ellipses, representing the planetary orbits, from a sideways perspective. I'm going to need a
picture like that for the site background anyway. Someone could upgrade it to a full map.

Cheers,
Janez

PS: As you probably noticed, I'm testing another theme. There is a new poll and a draft for the Site rules. See Books
and check out Ranks & promotions :) you might like what you see. I've also included the United Powers concept you
guys were discussing in the OSN forum. So you will be ambassadors to, senators and presidents of UP :)

BTW: Elected functions are "addon" ranks. Meaning you are STILL a senator, plus you get extra priviledges for the
duration of your tenure. When you are replaced by a new "minister" you resume being a senator, with the status of
ex-function holder. Not really supported by the system, but still highly prestigious, since we will all know it :)

Cheers,
Janez

Heya Mike, I see you registered and had a problem logging in. If it was a password issue, send me a private message here on
Dan's forum and I can fix it for you...hopefully... If it was due to your slow internet connection, then there's not much I
can do (though maybe Doc can do something...). Since you registered, I'll go ahead and set the correct author for the
Galactic Federation 3 stuff.

hehe, hey madmike :) I was sleeping the past 12h and sort of missed this :)
I see my co-admin is hot on the job. :)

The registry process is pretty straightforward, you just register as a new user.

The page is still being set up, so things change from day to day. So appart from the faction data, other things are not yet
reliable.  Like the links to faction data disappeared. That's because this theme uses a different systm and those need to be
set up again.

Yesterday I set up the cron job, so RSS feeds are now automatically updated and the search engine now workds (it uses a cron
process to index the engine)

I can't dedicate as much time to this as I'd like so it things are progressing slower. All in all we are progressing, so just bear with me :)

Oh, Travis, you're not OSN Police anymore :) You are now a Gray Eminence. Later on, we will open accounts as
regular users, and these two will be for maintenance only. The rest of you are Ambassadors to the United Powers :)

See here (draft, need to finalize it, I'm open to suggestions):

Oh boy! *toddles off to create another account for non-admin use*

Also Doc, you might wish to update the links at the top of this thread as they seem to be somewhat outdated now...

Have created my second account, found I needed a second email addy to do so...:(

Anyway, all the SMTC stuff is now authored by Simon Monroe instead of Travis Reed. I'll soon be using Capt. Monroe's blog for
captain's logs and such, personal thoughts, etc. Sad part of it is, most of it will be applicable only as out of character
knowledge. But it will certainly give the various players some insight into my character.

Hm. There is no rush. Things are still quite unrelieable. Haven't thought about that though:) The system uses username as
well as emai as IDs.. so no duplicates allowed.  I'm also thinking of transforming nation pages into books, so every nation
will have it's records in one "box". Like the Book of rules. Simple maintenance, and easy to read all about a single nation.

The purpose of the blogs is PRECISELY that Travis :) I mean, Capt. Monroe :) Hopefuly the blog entries from all people will
be sorted chronologically, so we could actually have "stories" like we had here..

This will be fun.

I'm still debating with myself how to manage uploads. Basically the system allows almost any document, post, article or page
to also have an attached document. Which is all well and nice, but to make it easy to use, I'll have to designate a special
"area" for uploads, otherwise non-registered visitors will have a helluva time finding uploads/downloads if they will be
scaterred accross different types of content..

I still need to install a few additional modules, that will make functionality better, so sit tight :)

Cheers,,
