Doc, the lesson to be learned is:
hehe, don't bother with the lesson-bit. As I said, I am rather used to dealing with virii, BUT:
- I was offline for almost 3 months and got a bit lazy
- I was so thrilled at being able to download and play online I kept delaying the "maintenance" jobs :)
- I kept away from the web generally, so I felt I was safe enough. My email account is quite well protected, you can't
even get a .zip across. This only happened because I was hunting for a patch crack for MOHAA Spearhead :)
- MOST importantly, my computer is due for a reformatting, but I couldn't be bothered, so I guess this incident could
also be classified as my unconscious attempt to force myself to do it :)

As a positive experience (as is always the case in emergency solving) I found this set of pages, you guys might also
consider useful - you can creaty bootable / diagnostic CDs. I'm making it a point to prepare a whole armory now :)
http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/
I didn't try it yet, but if it's half as useful as it all seems, it's a great set of tools.

#1: Always keep a firewall active. even a bad one is better than none. I use kerio. it's free for personal users, and
you even get the full version for 30 days. I only use the limited option features anyway, so no biggie (would you use
it for web filtering?)
Well, there IS a firewall on the router (yes, let's laugh together). I use ZoneAlarm and it seems to work well enough...
But it's supposed to have issues with WinXP SP-2 as it comes with its own firewall.... we'll see

#4: IE is really vulnerable, but I've become attached to it, so it's still my main one. However, I have copies of opera
and firefox if I think I'm going to be going into a landmine, so generally I have some armor then.
Yeah, me too..

That actually sounds like fun. sure it'd be slow as hell, but you only need speed like dsl for big files, and you got to
Yup it was.. I was something like 14 or 15 when I first got a BBS account. It was wikkid slow, but we still exchanged
stuff, but back then a game of like 1MB was HUGE :) Then there was the BBS (Bulletin Board Service) - a forum-type
thing - were you would post.. You  posted your messages in an off-line email-alike program and then connected,
exchanged the stuff and disconnected. Basically something like USENET News (which I never used though). It was
funny when ASCII  characters were "augmented" with ANSI set.. so now you had COLORS, and simple graphics.. The
xfer was so slow,  you had to wait for something like 10secs or more for the screen to redraw line by line :wall: like
watching a 9-pin  printer do it's thing.... But it was exciting as hell!!! I missed the age of Compuserve though. I read a
book about it,  and I REALLY got excited.. I remember the feeling surge again when I first tried Lynx a few years
later.. It was the text version of IE.

I'm sure the more ehm.. veteran users around here could share a ton of stories involving UNIX and
VAX/VMS communications, which were AGES ahead of PCs back in the 70s already..

Cheers,

Now I am not all that old (20) but I remember the days of BBS, back in the day. I remember obtaining a copy of
Warcraft 1, back when CD drives were just becoming popular, back when we had Tape Drives. My best friend and I
found an old tape drive a couple years ago, and put together a computer that could read it, and went through the
tapes we found, a lot of good ole classics we found. Ahhh, good ole days.

Free, you forgot two very important tools for dealing with malware...
HijackThis and Knoppix.
HijackThis is a windows program and is a "bug gun" (quick, someone throw out a link!)
Knoppix is a distribution of Linux that boots and runs from the CD, and is useful in repairing damage to a system, and
generally deleting malware files (that don't like to be deleted through Windows). Be warned though, if you use Knoppix you
must have it boot with the 2.6 Linux kernel otherwise it won't know what to make of NTFS partitions. Even then you have to
run one of the programs that comes on the CD to be able to make the NTFS writable (otherwise it's read only).
Again...someone post a link!

Ahhh, back online, armed with the full photon spread :) Partition Magic works magic :) I completely rearranged my
partitions :)

Spybot, adaware, AVG antivirus, SP-2 (just downloading) and I'll add ZoneAlarm Firewall, after Sp-2 is in position. I
feel safe, but I have the feeling soon the computer will become useless with all the PROTECTION software clogging
up the CPU and memory :)

That's why you need something better than that last generation chip you're probably toting around, doc. ;)

You guys are smarter than me. This look any good, it's just a cheap little upgrade from a 64mg GeForce4. I'm slowly upgrading
my PC you see.

I've added another 40 gig hard drive, which Brenton kindly gave me and doubled the RAM to 728mg. It's still not much, but
it's enough and next on my list is a 128mg graphics card, hopefully.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Danke.

That ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB DDR TV-Out Vid-Card ain't TOO bad, Atom... I had it in my last PC... but you might
want to wait for a little more Card Power if you already have a Ge4.  It won't really do Doom3 or HL2 justice, and
comes standard as a 'throw-away' in-system card with most new cheap PCs now.
I like upgrading in larger chunks.  :)

Um, I've actually got an old GeForce FX5200 card with 128MB sitting in my office gathering dust.  I'll drop it in if I'm
going through that way again :)

As we are going anti-something, let's fight against software patents:

Guess who got himself a gmail account today? :):):)

Despite my total hatred of privacy invasions, I cast them aside after deciding that I woudn't have to use it, and if
nothing else, it would make an awesome... storage bin for junk to access anywhere that has a connection to the
net. ;)

anyway. I encourage you all to email me there. I wanna try it out a little, so send whatever garbage you can find.
random messages, conspiracy theories, pictures, more dsinghis khan mp3s, keygens for FSpassengers when it comes
out, beta versions of the next orbiter, the source code for windows*... etc, etc. etc. :)

If you truly know me, and my tendancies torward nicknames, you'll have no problems figuring out the address of this
new account. ;)

*I'm not kidding on this one

Tell me if you got it.

Good luck with FSP codes though :) Dan is VERY good at protecting his work. As he should be, it's superb!

Indeed I have. I got an error, that indicated as if the user was non-existent.. Either that or my mail server timed out
and tried to blame it on gmail :) I doubt I got the email wrong, coz I just copy pasted your nick from here.
