So, What's your max dl speed now, Mr. Holiday? (it'd better not be over 180 KB/s...:grrr: )

How do I measure that actually? The LAN Connection status doesn't show it...

Just download a bunch of stuff, and the highest download speed you've got after about 10 seconds into a download
is usually your highest speed.

I see.. I've been messing around with Performance in Administrative tools.. It says something like: 30kb/s... does that
sound realistic?

I'm downloading emails at the moment.. I have accumulated over 4000 in the past couple of months!

Okay, since you're the binary-type around here Free..

512 Kilobits per second (which is my nomina bandwidth) translates into how many kiloBytes per second? divided by 8?

EDIT: Update, my running average is now around 55 KB/s :)

Well then Freespace, you're gonna be POed about my D/L speed...
*pokes over 2000 kBytes/sec*
Of course, it takes awhile to get up to that speed (thus requiring large files) so I don't often see this figure.
I do, however get at least 200 kbytes/sec (unless theres tons of traffic at target site or bandwidth issues on their end).

yes, yes. The actual max download speed is always slower than the 64 or so that they offer.

still, that's a hell of an improvement over the old modem you had. 8 bits make a byte, so yeah, just divide by 8 and
you get what they 'advertize' but my system of measurement requires actual download speed. wysiwug. also, I'd like
to note that I found a REALLY rare item that was being passed on as common crap yesterday.

I found a $10 bill from the 1950's!!! 8o Just so you all understand why I consider this valuable:

1. It's got that classic look that the crappy "big head" bills fail to achieve,
2. It doesn't have any of those ugly "counterfeit-proof" marks on them.
3. It isn't traceable because it doesn't have that magnetic strip in it.

but most importantly

4. It actually has markings that the US government "will pay to the bearer on demand" ten dollars (something that
inconspicuously disappeared from US money.) I don't remember handling bills with those words at all. all modern bills
just have the "ten dollars" part on them. To me, that is downright proof that the government isnt' backing it's own
currency, and that it's merely floating on inertia.

yup, I know about the difference in nominal (optimal) speed and actual. So it seems if I have 64 nominal and 54 or so
actual, that's 15% down, which is more or less what the ISP said it would be :)

I am VERY pleased. I sure as heck beats the measly 28Kbps (-> 3KB/s?) or whatever I really got on the modem.

Cheers,

Well, the email to Vash has been sent, should get a reply soon (I hope)...
Yeah, I know I could've posted this in the OSN thread, but I wanted to save space there...as the thread is getting quite long.
Incidentally, I'm gonna have to move in a few days and I'm unsure as to whether I'll have a good enough internet connection
to host the OSN site anymore (at least for a couple of months). Doc, you mentioned something about being able to host it, right?

yup. I got the connection now. I need to sort out the php/mysql stuff on my site. But I'm not sure, how one transfers
a site like OSN? A lot easier to start from scratch..

All that needs done is for me to send you the files for the site and the SQL database which can be imported into your
(pre-existing) SQL server. The import is probably done in the same manner as it is when you install PHP-Nuke in the first place.

Yeah, but then we probably inherit the same problems with the forum?

The SQL import files are text files right?

I think so. *hasn't actually opened said files*
I imported them using PHP My Admin, a web based SQL tool.

Vash seems to have agreed to help repair the site. And in a day or two I'll know if I have to move the site or not (depends
on whether my dad will let me set up my comp at his place, leaving it running the server, or not...)

Okay, that sounds great. Meanwhile, can you find out the version of your MySQL, PHP, Apache (assuming that's what
you're running it on) and possibly something else, so I can compare to my setup?

Alright I made a stupid mistake a couple of nights ago.. I hunted for a patch and managed to get my ass in the
minefield of web ads/virus/malware infested sites.. I didn't have any kind of Firewall / Adaware thing running though.
Got infected by 13 virii in a matter of seconds. Although AVG managed to kill most of them, one of them is totally
imune. It dispays a stupid warning on the desktor saying that I am in danger of being infected (!) and that I should
purchase a proper tool for it, and bullshit like that..

Anyway, I activated full defenses, but it's too late now. The virus is very smart and actually disables them before they
start running... Then I try the "lateral" approach to the problem. I got all the updates for Windows I could find, hoping
that in the process the Windows installs would actually overwrite the virus... No luck there either, the virus just got
ticked off, started uploading/downloading like crazy (I don't even want to know what, I just switched off the router)
and disabled running of programs.. No .exe, .com, .bat. or other executables will run.. at all ... Nothing works, short of
Explorer...... Fortunate too. I transfered all the critical stuff to the other computer in the network and now I'm going
to kill Windows, format the hard drive and scrub it with a sponge if I have to and start all over.... I was going to do
this anyway, becuase the hard drive picked up quite a few lost chains, defragmentation errors and whatnots and
was increasingly less manegeable...

The problem is I lost my WinXP installation CD when I moved to this appartment. This time I actually had it, yes..... I
do have a copy of it, but the CD isn't bootable and windows won't install, unless I boot with it, because the current
windows version is "newer" than the one on CD... go figure.. Anyway to get around this? I dunno, delete or rename
the windows directory?? And how the heck to you make a system bootable CD?????

So effectively until further notice, I am AGAIN offline from home.. :)

Cheers,
Janez

Damn, Doc.  Sounds like you're in a world of Fun over there.  I could zip you some utilities that'll made a sysboot CD,
or some yummy cookies with marshmellows, or even a few dozen even More powerful new counter-active Viri, but
that probably wouldn't leave you with a lesson to be learned now, would it?  ;)  :)

Okay... so COULD any of us help?
Are you able to retrieve 100mb streams of software, or are you resolved to nuking your primary 'puter?

I'm resolved. The file system is pretty screwed up, scandisk shows a lot of unreadable sectors, so it's necessary
anyway.. Plus I want to rearrange the partitions now that I'm at it.. I'm working with Partition Magic 7.0, but I have
NO floppy in the house that actually works, so I got myself a couple today.  PM 7.0 is able to run from a floppy, get it
all set up and in the end you just pop in the Win CD and start installing..

I won't make the same mistake again. I have adaware, AVG and ZoneAlarm firewall in ready-5 state :) I was just
freaking shocked the internet became such a damn jungle since the last time I had a good connection.. And that
antivirus companies actually write a virus to convince you to buy their anti-virus... it's sick...

I wouldn't mind that sysboot utility though. Unless I can get my sysadmin here at work to lend me a copy, I'll have to
get creative with the non-boot install disk I have :)

I actually take this sort of things as fun. It's just another game. But I'm not shooting at alien monsters, but instead
fighting with a virus for supremacy over my computer :) I have a lot of experience with it, but viruses got more
intelligent in the process and also, fortunatelly they carry less payload nowadays..

In the old days, the virus just told you you're a prick AFTER it formatted your drive.. Now it only messes with your
head and makes working on your computer a living hell.. In the old days, there were hackers pushing the envelope,
now they are corporate thugs, trying to get the common user to support institution of laws that would put restrictive
control mechanisms on Internet -> kill freedom of speech. And they are succeeding at it too :(

In a few years, the few of us, freethinkers will be back at using the hardlines, using 386 with DR DOS, talking over
BBSs via 2400 baud modems...

Cheers,
Janez

Doc, the lesson to be learned is:

#1: Always keep a firewall active. even a bad one is better than none. I use kerio. it's free for personal users, and
you even get the full version for 30 days. I only use the limited option features anyway, so no biggie (would you use
it for web filtering?)

www.kerio.com

#2: both ad-aware and spybot are necessities in this day and age. I honestly can't believe that you were so
naive doc. I thought you were more net savvy than that. :( You're forgiven though. I've done the same thing, and I'm sure you don't like that any more than I did.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

#3: Remember that viruses start up as windows does, so you're infinitely fubared if you try to stop all exes from
running after the thing is already executed. I use start-ed(itor) to hopefully find it on window's start up list and delete it from there, but I've not the faintest where you can download it. I keep the install files of all the typical proggys I use, so I can send it to you if you like. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt, and it's only about an MB.

#4: IE is really vulnerable, but I've become attached to it, so it's still my main one. However, I have copies of opera
and firefox if I think I'm going to be going into a landmine, so generally I have some armor then.

That actually sounds like fun. sure it'd be slow as hell, but you only need speed like dsl for big files, and you got to
remember that you won't be downloading fancy graphics and stuff on that kind of computer and connection anyway.
those days were before my time, but I'd sure like to learn how to do it anyway. :) Of course, there's always the
chance that by the time that becomes necessary, all the copper wires we use for telephones will all be obsolete and
either unused, or dug up for fiberoptics. ;)
