Title: [Off Topic] GUPT X
Post by: UAF_Lt_Brenton on 29 June 2005, 11:25:50
GUPT IX seems to have died.  Close this one if that's not the case though :)

I'm gonna start with a (possibly USEFUL) advertisement - click the link.

The GUPT XI has only 35, so I think it's not the time to open the next.
Anyway, in GUPT VIII I claimed the GUPT X. Look at the bottom of the GUPT VIII. ;)

You are forgetting the rule that no one can start a new GUPT without permission from the admin and/or
moderator. Permission wouldn't have been granted anyway because McBrain rightly claimed the next GUPT. :)

Sooooooooooooooooo, this thread is against the rules, and may qualify as flooding.

I agree wholly with the above 3 posts. We can't be going through one every week.

I donno... It's been a long time since I've seen a good old fashioned Keel-hauling.

then again, it may have been my free invite to Siggraph that caused the untimely death of GUPT IX. :(

Happy America Day, to all people of the world! :) (A bit of irony in that statement. ;) )

No offense my British buddies, as nowadays all it really means to people is an excuse to get drunk, close stores early,
and make the whole damn country smell like gunpowder. (you laugh at that last one, but if only you knew...)

That is undoubtably why DocHoliday suspects that Slovenia will also be adopting the holiday this year. :)

And as to my komrade Americans, I paste a message I got as email to heighten your spirits.
---------------------------

As we go out to celebrate our freedom this 4th of July,
let's go over a few things to make your celebration a success.

Before leaving home make sure you check the color coded Homeland Security alert status. Be especially careful if it is
orange or red.  Don't worry about yellow.  It's always yellow.

Don't use any illegal fireworks in your 4th Celebration. It is for your own safety. And the founding father's
implemented a government to protect you from yourselves. Didn't they? Besides, fireworks are explosive devices and
you might be considered a terrorist with weapons of mass destruction.  And although the government can't find any
in Iraq, you can rest assured they will find them in your car trunk.  But don't worry, getting arrested, imprisoned
indefinitely without formal charges, and a 5 year wait before the secret tribunal trial per the Patriot Act is a breeze.
It's that secret summary execution that should make you nervous.

Make sure you are buckled up in your seat belts, there will be roadblocks and checkpoints to make sure you comply. It
is for the children.

If you are an airline employee, lighten up for the holiday, you can always look for a job tomorrow. Maybe you could
transfer over to a Federal Airport Security Screener job.  Big demand for those jobs and you don't have to be smart.

If you are a Haliburton employee, then celebrate, you probably have a raise coming from the Iraqi contract windfall.

If celebrating on any public property,
make no mention or religious ideals.
Government is god there.
You will be aprehended.

Have your papers ready as you approach the holiday police checkpoints.

Don't criticize the President, or other government officials, you might be in violation of the Patriot Act and considered a
possible terrorist.

Don't mention the Constitution in any district court,
or you could be held in contempt.

If your children get out of line this holiday,
do not discipline them,
or they may be kidnapped by the Dept. of Social Services and held hostage until you receive approved psychological
therapy and are deemed acceptable.

Show compassion this Independence Day by bringing an illegal immigrant to your celebration, or by hugging a tree.

If an election is occurring in your locality within the next 90 days, do not talk about or publicly support any candidate,
as that is no longer lawful. Keep your mouth shut.

If an officer asks to search your vehicle at the "seat belt" checks, do not be belligerent and demand a search
warrant.  Standing up for your fourth amendment rights is anti-social and not in tune with the new American way.  Are
you with Al Quada or something?

Do not get upset when the searching officer will not help you pick up your belongings that he has strewn all over the
highway as he searched your vehicle.  It is not in his job description and complaining will get you charged with
obstructing justice.

Keep your guns at home.  You are not going hunting and besides, What on earth do guns have to do with American
Independence?  Better yet, turn your guns into the authorities to let them know that you are a true patriotic American.

Better yet, just STAY at home. BUT do not assume that you are safe,
because you are at home. If a government bureaucrat shows up at your home, he will probably be flashing a badge
at you. This makes him look like a constitutional law enforcement officer. He may even be armed. Do not ask to see a
warrant, and then tell him to leave if he does not have one. They will put a siege around your house. If you do not
come out soon enough, they may invade, with guns drawn, or even set your house on fire.
For more information, do a Google search using keywords like "Symbionese Liberation Army", "Philadelphia MOVE
group",  "Gordon Kahl", "The Order", "Robert Matthews", "Covenant of the Sword and Arm of the Lord",  "Randy
Weaver" , "Branch Davidian", or "Elian Gonzalez".

If you are counting on you congressman to protect you,
understand that the average congressman is ALSO afraid to resist.
For more information, do a Google search using keywords like "George Hanson" , "James Trafficant" or "Larry
McDonald".

If celebrating at the mall in Washington DC. you are probably safe as the mall is now monitored by hundreds of
surveillance cameras, watched by federal security forces.  Don't do anything that you wouldn't want them to see.

Bring lots of cash with you, there will be many taxes, fines, and fees to pay as you celebrate your freedoms this day.

Do not leave home without your driver's license, social security card, birth certificate, welfare card, medicare card,
medical records, W-2 Form, and two others forms of ID.  You may be asked for them at the police checkpoints.
Better yet, get micro-chipped, and avoid the hassle of carrying around your papers.

Bring your library card, the FBI may ask you for it.

Do not put any "anti-government" bumper stickers on your car. Especially not anything about the right to keep and
bear arms. Police have been trained by the FBI in "bumper sticker profiling".
This attracts their attention at the check points, and makes you look like a terrorist.

With regard to "bumper sticker profiling" you should be especially aware of the fact that "They will get my gun, when
they pry it from my cold dead fingers" is no longer mere semantics. At WACO, and at RUBY RIDGE,
we learned that they WILL kill you to take your guns

ALSO, be careful not to have any unauthorized THOUGHTS.
There are now serious penalties for "thought crime".
Be aware that "civil forfeiture" laws make it possible to take anything that you own, by alleging that it was "intended"
to be used for the commission of a crime. This could include transporting, or storing, a gun.
If "civil forfeiture" proceedings are initiated against you,
then you will have the burden of proof,
to show that your thoughts were in compliance with government standards.

Get to know some politicians, and bureacrats, so that you might be able to head off the taking of your private
property to be given to private developers for "public good".

If traveling by air, this Independence Day, do not give the airport screeners a hard time.  They are feeling you up, and
molesting your daughter, and wife, for the security of America.  If you complain you could be arrested.  You don't
support Bin Laden do you?

Keep an eye on your fellow Americans as you celebrate this 4th of July.  If you see anything supicious, take notes so
that when you get home you can call and report them to the Homeland Security Office.  And remember you are not a
nosey snitch, you are a great American Patriot.

Do not mention the signers of the Declaration of Independence this 4th of July.  Mentioning these white subversive
terrorists is not popular and could get you in big trouble.  Besides what do these guys have to do with the 4th of July
anyway?

Do not leave home without one or more little plastic American flags made by political slaves in Communist China.
Make sure you have one flying from the antennae of your vehicle.  You don't want to seem un-American do you?

Do not take a copy of the Declaration of Independence with you as it advocates the overthrow of tyrannical
government.  It is a terrorist document and will be confiscated at the holiday police checkpoints.  Same advice for the
Constitution.

And remember, as you leave home for your 4th of July outing, that the second you stepped out of your door that you
probably broke hundreds of federal, state, and local laws that you are probably unaware of.  However, if you tow the
line, you will not be charged.

Don't even think about taxes on this great day.  The 50 per cent government confiscation of your income at the threat
of imprisonment or at the point of a gun should not even cross your mind as you revel in your freedom.  After all, April
15th is a long way off.

And whatever you do, do not let on that you really know that true freedom died a long time ago in America, just have
fun for the day and then go home and stick your head back in the sand and pretend America is not becoming a
socialist police state.

Now go out there and celebrate your freedom, and liberty,
and have a great sanitized, politically correct, and government approved and authorized Independence Day!

If you have a few decades with nothing better to do,
study up on "administrative law".
Laws are now made by the unelected bureaucrats,
in hundreds of "administrative agencies".
If you are charged with violating one of these "laws" you will not get a trial by a jury of your peers.
You will be tried by the agency that made the charge.

I hope this message gets past the Department of Homeland security approved internet filter.
How else can they protect us from unauthorized thought?

Now go out and celebrate your freedom,
and have a great Independence Day!

Hey, Freespace !!

Feeling a little bitter these days?

Remember what Heinlein said. In order to fight a police state, you have to become a police state. Since the heady days of the
Nuremburg Trials, it has taken the United States only sixty years to take on the vestiges of one.

Even though what you posted may be "tongue in cheek", it is precisely that way that the US is being viewed today by many
outside of the US.

At the present time, perhaps we have more to fear from the American "government" than from the pirates of Al Qaeda.

What ever happened to "Truth, Justice and the American Way"? Has it been replaced by Al Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay or Diego
Garcia (which in another time and another age could have been called Gulag, Dachau, and Belsen)?

Russia seems to be slowly exitting her "dark age" and growing up. What the hell has happened to America?

want some of the GeForce4 features and the memory of the FX5200.

It's my B-day. july 22.

I'm officially an adult at 21 now, no matter how much I try to squirm out of it now... *swniff*

that just means more of those pesky "responsibility" thingies for me.

Boy, life would be a lot more fun without those.... maybe I can stall life by going in a star trek transporter with an
error that'll turn me into a kid again... just like picard did in that one episode... (I'm a half-trekkie, so I imagine such
things somethings. :))

anyways, I just started orbiter up after leaving it alone for so long, and I realized that I couldn't even dock with the
ISS! It was embarassing, so I'm gonna have to work on that.

Congrats, Free. You're an old man now, enjoy it while it lasts, heheh.

I'm fooling around with Dan's FSP these days. It's just amazing! Making humanitarian aid runs over Bosnia and
Somalia. Iraq is a bit too hot for my Hercules atm :)

I actually don't have FS 2004 installed right now because I'm suffering from a critical hard drive problem - I'm out of
space, with less than 2-3 gigs total free, so I really can't play around with FsP, because we all know how much space
Fs '04 takes up. I need to get some dvds and start burning stuff like there's no tomorrow.

Though I was thinking of making a parody of FsP of sorts once I get around to actually try it. complete with
freespacian humor in abundance. as to what form it would be in is anyone's guess, but I've got ideas... hehe..

anyways, to anybody that wants to give me money because it's my birthday only has to click below.

but one can't have everything uh ? :)

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! I could have used that money to pay off my student loans...

they seem to get bigger all the time... :(

;)

anyways, dan, I'm sorry, but while I agree july (the month of julius caesar, no less) is the best of them all, the 22nd is
a better day, because all one has to do is look up the birthdays of David Spade, Danny Glover, Alex Trebek, and even
Bob Dole.

Bon anniversaire, too, free.

Don't let the 21 get you down. Looking at it from my advanced state, you're still a pup !! All 21 means is that you can
legally drink alcohol anywhere on the continent. Just remember about the mixture of young testosterone and too much alcohol.

And if it helps, the advice that I keep giving young females:

Remember, a male, IF he matures, it doesn't happen until he hits 40. Unless he goes through a specific trauma first, none of
us ever really grows up. (if you're wondering about that specific trauma, check my bio or ask Doc.)

...  but you will know that you have to grow up, when you look into the bright eyes of that little one in a crib, that you
helped put there with the whole hearty help of its mother, and it looks up at you ... and smiles ... and finally learn what is the true miracle and know the existance of God ... and know, like the rest of us ... that you are doomed. ;)

Sorry free but your totally wrong on this....

A bit of serious scientific calculus will prove that :

22=2+2=4 if you do the square root of this and add 7.6543 wich is the gold number
in astrology you get exactly 16.8764 wich was a really bad number for the aztec
(should I recall that they were in fact extra terrestrial coming from vega and that their
science  is 2000 years in front of our ?)

in contrary if you do the same with 25 you find exactly 23.2345 wich is
considered as the "gold number" of many civilisation.
Also 76.45% of crop circle have this angle in their drawing wich is for
me the ultimate scientific proof.

so 25 is THE day...

anyway don't be sad, you're born also in july and you had a litle part of the light
just by this fact.

Nothing is lost for you :)

I completed Far Cry. I just had to mention that because I'm quite happy about about it. And this IS GUPT so. I also got Halo
working decently, even though it's in 800x600, but it's still playable. I need that new processor. Ahhhhhhh 3.0GHz, can't wait.

That was a random news announcement. :)

Well *I* got around to trying that mount & blade game that I had remembered doc telling us about.

I was pretty impressed with it considering that it's being developed by only 2 people, however, I can't say much
about it because it crashes on me after about 3-4 minutes of playing. I can say it's pretty early in development, but I
do like the fighting system. very cool.

It's very nicely done, especially the mounted first-person play. I've never seen it done quite so well. Especially when
jousting. But after a while, as with all things, I got bored.

I'm currently looking at Silent Hunter III. The videos are amazing! Check them out yourselves. I'm just worried if I get
the game, my work will suffer

I've got Silent Hunter 2. That's a good game, nice damage system on the subs. And I will be lucky if I can scrounge enough

hehe.

All this talk of upgrades is making me itchy for some too.

but doc.. WOW!

That silent hunter is really something.. :)

Just remember doc, that although it is universally acknowledged that there is a time for work and a time for play,
nobody ever thought to define what times those are...   enjoy yourself, doc. ;)

What the hell is this!?

I've just given up on my country. We're all just a bunch of morons.

Or are our esteemed politicians doing this on purpose!?

This personally reminds me of the time that FEMA pricks stopped volunteers from putting out the massive woodland
fires that were burning a while back because they weren't 'authorized'  to do so.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/tm_objectid%3D16147117%26method%3Dfull%26siteid%3D94762%26headline%3Dexclusive--58--up-in-flames-name_page.html

I'm sorry, to all the people of the world, I'm sorry, for (1) my country's arrogance to everyone. Even if this food
is 'passed' it never should have been put aside in the first place, and (2) not being able to fire every single person
responsible for this insult to you all.

I deem this a critical failure, and I find it all the more insulting that I had to go to a british site to get word of this. It's
just not news 'fit' for the american public.  I guess they fear that if this was aired on cnn, people might not be very
happy...

Hi guys. I know I haven't been on here in AGES, but I've been enjoying my early teen years!!

Anyway, straight to the point, could anyone make me a groovy name thingy for me? Use the name Char or Chodge
which is my nickname at school. I want to stick it on my school diary. It could be anything but it has to look wicked!
I know you can do it; I've seen yours!! I'll check on here in a couple of days to see them.

Thanks,

Well now.

I seem to remember somebody saying that THIS GUY

 http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000092/

was one of britain's funniest actors after a link was posted to a clip that portrayed him as a psycologist.

(How do you spell that word, it's like the only one I screw up every time....)

anyway, I would just like to announce that HE CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO MR BEAN! (Rowan atkinson)

This is possibly the funniest shot in the series...

BTW, Free, it's psychologist.

And John Cleese is way funnier than Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean (Bean sucks rocks, big time). But Rowan Atkinson as BlackAdder
... tough choice. Atkinson's very best stuff is saved for live performances on stage.

Britain has produced some pretty good comedians. I think the best was Sidney James (remember the Carry On movies?). But then,
I really am dating myself.

And as good as the Brits and Canadians are at comedy ... my all time favourite is George Carlin. "The Seven Dirty Words You
Can't Say on the Public Airwaves" and "Grey Hairs Driving in my Lane" are timeless classics.

What's the odds that somebody else came up with that name, eh?

Surely we have a copyright for the idea somewhere? then we can wage another solar system war. :)

(also, I happen to prefer mr. bean to blackadder. It's just a matter of personal preference, though.. it fits my brand of humor.)

OK, everbody! I'm back!

Let's look at what I've been doing!! :):)

http://www.2kgames.com/index.php?p=games&title=sunion

this is a game called Shattered Union, and while it's a bit boring in actuality. (it's rather long and monotonous, though
I learned a great deal of geography if the game is even slightly accurate. :) ) I think the premise is quite fun and I
enjoyed visiting all of the major american cities, even if a few of them DID blow up along the way... :pfff:

Here are somepersonal screenshots I picked out from my ventures in the game.

this is washington DC, or rather, what's left of it after a nuke blows it up... This is the incident that shatters the US in
the game, creating several factions. Including my own... I started off in chicago, my hometown, so it took a while for
my armies to finally reach the place. (I stopped in NYC on the way, and there was a lot of fighting there... Thankfully
not too much in the city proper,  but regretfully, a few enemies sought cover there, thinking I would be a sissy and so
there's a few black scorchmarks where some skyscrapers once stood.... oh well... :pfff: ;) )

This is much later ingame, I was retaking the ozarks. the city highlighted in green is Independence, Mo. (a bit far from
where I lived in arkansas, but they're both on the same "map" ingame, even though where I lived was too small to
be of importance (and thus be represented here).... :( Though the cool thing about independence was it's importance
on the famous oregon trail. just look up independence rock.

(the city and rock were named as such because you wanted to get there before the 4 of july, so you would know
you're on shcedule.)

anyways, *ehem* on we go through the pics... :)

This is the houston/Fort worth area.

as you can see from the pic, it sustained serious damage from fighting. Now this is just as I had gotten to it.
the US ingame had split into several factions ingame, and this particular territory changed hands rather often, so I
knew that I had to be very careful here. I really didn't want to add to the already nasty damage here, and with the
exception of a small laser guided tactical missle, I suceeded in preventing any fire from hitting the city.

Looking back on this, (I've already beaten the game) I'll say that this was easily the worst damaged city I've seen
besides washington (but washington doesn't count, since it started off that way ingame)

Hey, look what we have here, it's Edwards AFB! It was apparently abandoned, as I encountered no resistance here.
this did not surprise me too much, because this was the last territory I needed to complete the continental '48, and I
had already beaten the last surviving faction several times over in a blitzkrieg-like fashion, taking much of the later
western states without really any resistance.. all that was left was to take Los angeles.. and that was just around
the corner...

Incidently, Los angeles also took some damage from fighting well before I had arrived, but it really wasn't all that
bad. the famous Hollywood sign had survived, though, and I made sure I didn't damage that, either. there was only
scattered resistance here, most of it being civilian partisians with armed and armored station wagons. (I kid you not,
it was quite funny to watch myself.)

after this, I had pretty much finished the game. There was a little movie at this part that even made me feel a little
patriotic, but then they had to ruin it with a totally corny "God bless america" bit.  though I had yet to save alaska
from the ones who had nuked Washington and then subsequently invaded alaska, but I'll not spoil that for you.

Whadya think? I really liked this game's premise, and it delieved very nicely, but It was boring (often having to defend
the same territories over and over again, before you can finally start invading) and damned near impossible to play at
the beginning due to being attacked, draining my funds, preventing me from making any progress.

Despite that though, I give it a B+ pretty darned good.

lemme know what you think. ;)

(by the way. you can also play as european "peacekeepers" ;) The only thing I didn't like was that european reason
for being in america was for reuniting the states.  The problem being was that it was obvious that *I* was going to
be the one to do that, (or at least it was obvious to me... :pfff: ) anyway, europe attacked NYC while it was in my
custody and I then was forced to kick their asses. no hard feelings, though. we can still be friends afterwards,
right? ;) )

A very long reach to make a conclusion unsupported by anything else within the body of the article. Another diatribe that all
of our problems today are the fault of the UN, an organization of which the US is a founder and holds one of the very few
vetoes (5) in the Security Council.

He draws no links between the Federal Reserve Act in 1913 and the founding of the UN in 1946 and the IMF. I'm rather
surprised he didn't mention the Club of Rome and the Bilderberg Group while he was at it.

I'd like to see his CV to establish what his true bona fides are. The arguments he makes are pet subjects amongst
fundamentalist extremists: 1. It's all the fault of the UN and 2. It's all the fault of the international bankers.

We've been down the road with #2 many times before. It culminated in the Holocaust. Do we have to go down this road again, on
this side of the Atlantic?

He was focused on the Fed so he probably couldn't get into the juicy stuff. ;)

Well, The guy has wrote several books. It's said he's in the "who's who of america" but that's a paid service, so I
couldn't get access to it. curiously, the wiki has an article on him, but any person could write that, so people can make
of that what they wish. I admit that it's pretty extreme, though I'm focusing only on the federal reserve, and I think
he did a good job on saying what it is. The rest is his personal opinion, but that you can't back it with evidence is not
reason enough to disregard the other stuff he's mentioned.

So anyone in France want to tell us how you're holding out?

I've known about the rioting for a few days now, but since I've read that a curfew is going into effect in certain areas
soon, that's got me curious.

I'd really like to get some opinions and facts of what's going on from a more first-hand perspective.

I really don't have faith in the press to be 100% accurate actually.. and since I really don't know any French, I can't
use the francophone forum. (and babelfish isn't made for more than a few sentences, much less whole
conversations...)

Dan? Anyone?

Just fine... nothing to report here..., a nice and quiet night start
as most place in france :)

Problem are really localised in some place only.
About what's happening exactly I'm affraid my english might not be enough good
to state clearly what happen without misinterpretation anyway I'll give it a try.

My personnal opinion is that first the politic are culprit since years of only
watching the next election and are busy calling each other name instead of defining
and running what would be a "midle" and reasonnable politic.

They are also culprit of trowing war beetween community for electoral purpose.
(emphasis made on difference and finger pointed on community for being the culprit
of all problem (unemployment etc)
On the other side you have idiot that simply denegate that there could be any problem
beetween community. Of course there is some problems, but the solution is not to
bash other or say that we must unconditionnaly love them. Living together is a difficult task.

Anyway in democraty nobody being honest that tell the truth can be elected, the truth
is simply innaceptable.  I recall here that in contrary of what the media and the movies
try to make us believe that lying is the first ingredient for peace in the world and beetween people,
nobody can simply always tell the thruth to anyone "hey guy you are sucking I don't like you"
"wow we are running in the wall if we don't pay more taxes" and expect that the world is a peacefull
place anymore. This is true for individual but also for country. Thus no politic can really tell the truth
and expect to be elected. Therefore lying in democraty is a necessity.

See bush, he's the first lyer in the world but everyone in democraty preffer lyers that show us a simple
binary world "us" and "them" with simple solutions "nuk'em all" than a guy showing all the complexity
of the world with no real "clear solution" that can solve every problems. (there is simply no solutions
like that in reallity)

Second culprit are the media emphasising since year on "individual" and
selfish attitude, ("wow you are unique" "you are the one" ) most people
don't have anymore a "big picture" view and nobody care about other anymore.
Also emphasis is put on "rebell" attitude wich is now considered as a must
and rebel people are shown as heroes (Che guevara was an sanguinary idiot
with no real program still many teenager have a poster of this bad guy)

Third most guy putting fire are just uneducated kid getting some fun, as it seem
most parent yet fail to educate them. for most the "poverty" or racisme are only
an excuse, most didn't tried so hard to get a job and make their life.

Kids that put fire considered themself as "heros" (see "rebel above") and don't
have any other claim than simply making TV news speak about them
and get some power by pissing everyone.

There is a problem of racism and poverty don't get me wrong but this is not
actually the >>main<< reason for the actuall events in france.

My two cents of course....  My english might not help also to understand my point of view...

And I'm sure glad I asked. :)

You don't get this sort of opinion in the newspapers. I wonder why... ;)

1. Most North American newspapers pretty well ignore everything outside of North America, unless they can crow about how good
North America is.

2. Free, go read some more of the stuff that you posted links to earlier, or similar. It goes hand in hand with what that
gentleman said about getting stuff printed by the publishing houses. Same street, different corner.

3. Usually the asking ends up in a flame war, rather than honest information exchange and debate.

Dan, your English wasn't bad ... not great ... but it was understandable and that's the main thing. I'm not sure about
European news media, but Canadian newsmedia has a distinct leftist bias, so much of what is happening is not being reported.
Asking like Free did, and getting an answer from someone there, and not in the newsmedia, allows for a more balanced
information exchange. Thanks for answering him.

Sure you welcome, I love to speak about that unfortunately

I would love to type 2 or 10 pages more of opinions but

Here's a letter to the American People, aka Freespace.

In the light of your failure to elect a proper President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give
notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume
monarchial duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy. Your new prime
minister (The Right Honourable Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world
outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you
noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium". Check the pronunciation guide.
You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as
'favour' and 'neighbour', skipping the letter 'U' is nothing more than laziness on your part. Likewise, you will learn to
spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters.
You will end your love affair with the letter 'Z' (pronounced 'zed' not 'zee' and the suffix "ize" will be replaced by the
suffix "ise". You will learn that the suffix 'burgh is pronounced 'burra' e.g. Edinburgh. You are welcome to respell
Pittsburgh as 'Pittsberg' if you can't cope with correct pronunciation.
Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up "vocabulary". Using the same twenty seven words
interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look
up "interspersed". There will be no more 'bleeps' in the Jerry Springer show. If you're not old enough to cope with bad
language then you shouldn't have chat shows. When you learn to develop your vocabulary then you won't have to use bad
language as often.

2. There is no such thing as "US English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be
adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of "-ize".

3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn't that hard. English accents are not
limited to Cockney, upper-class twit or Mancunian (Daphne in Frasier).
You will also have to learn how to understand regional accents - Scottish dramas such as "Taggart" will no longer be
broadcast with subtitles. While we're talking about regions, you must learn that there is no such place as Devonshire in
England. The name of the county is "Devon". If you persist in calling it Devonshire, all American States will become "shires"
e.g. Texasshire, Floridashire, Louisianashire.

4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys. Hollywood will be required to cast
English actors to play English characters.
British sit-coms such as "Men Behaving Badly" or "Red Dwarf" will not be re-cast and watered down for a wishy-washy American
audience who can't cope with the humour of occasional political incorrectness.

5. You should relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen", but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would
not want you to get confused and give up half way through.

6. You should stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American "football"
is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no
one else plays "American" football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football.
Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game.
Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not
involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies). We are hoping to get
together at least a US rugby sevens side by 2005.
You should stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the 'World Series' for a game which is not
played outside of America. Since only 2.15% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is
understandable. Instead of baseball, you will be allowed to play a girls' game called "rounders" which is baseball without
fancy team strip, oversized gloves, collector cards or hotdogs.

7. You should declare war on Quebec and France, using nuclear weapons if they give you any merde. The 97.85% of you who were
not aware that there is a world outside your borders should count yourselves lucky. The Russians have never been the bad
guys. "Merde" is French for "****".

You will no longer be allowed to own or carry guns. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous in
public than a vegetable peeler. Because we don't believe you are sensible enough to handle potentially dangerous items, you
will require a permit if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

8. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 2nd will be a new national holiday, but only in England. It will be
called "Indecisive Day".

9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are cr*p and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will
understand what we mean. All road intersections will be replaced with roundabouts. You will start driving on the left with
immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables.
Roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips. Fries aren't even French; they
are Belgian though 97.85% of you (including the guy who discovered fries while in Europe) are not aware of a country called
Belgium.
Those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called "crisps". Real chips are thick cut and fried in animal fat.
The traditional accompaniment to chips is beer, which should be served warm and flat.
Waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers.

11. As a sign of penance 5 grams of sea salt per cup will be added to all tea made within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,
this quantity to be doubled for tea made within the city of Boston itself.

12. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all, it is lager. From November 1st only
proper British Bitter will be referred to as "beer", and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to
as "Lager".
The substances formerly known as "American Beer" will henceforth be referred to as "Near-Frozen Knat's Urine", with the
exception of the product of the American Budweiser company whose product will be referred to as "Weak Near-Frozen Knat's
Urine". This will allow true Budweiser (as manufactured for the last 1000 years in Pilsen, Czech Republic) to be sold without
risk of confusion.

13. From December 1st the UK will harmonise petrol (or "Gasoline" as you will be permitted to keep calling it until April 1st
2005) prices with the former USA. The UK will harmonise its prices to those of the former USA and the Former USA will, in
return, adopt UK petrol prices (roughly $6/US gallon - get used to it).

14. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many
lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Adults should only handle guns. If you're not
adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.

15. Please tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us crazy.

Tax collectors from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all revenues due
(backdated to 1776).

Thank you for your cooperation.

I found it on another forum, there is a reply to it as well:

SUBJECT: NOTICE OF REVOCATION OF INDEPENDENCE

To the citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland:

We welcome your concern about our electoral process. It must be exciting for you to see a real Republic in action, even if
from a distance. As always we're amused by your quaint belief that you're actually a world power. The sun never sets on the
British Empire! Right-o chum!

However, we regretfully have to decline your offer for intervention. On the other hand, it would be amusing to see you try to
enforce your new policy (for the 96.3% of you that seem to have forgotten that you have little to no real power). After much
deliberation, we have decided to continue our tradition as the longest running democratic republic. It seems that switching
to a monarchy is in fact considered a "backwards step" by the majority of the world.

To help you rise from your current anachronistic status, we have compiled a series of helpful suggestions that we hope you adopt:

1. Realize that language is an organic structure, and that you aren't always correct in your pronunciation or spelling. Let's
use your "aluminium" example. Sir Humphrey Davy (an Englishman) invented the name "aluminum" (note spelling) for the metal.
However, in common usage the name evolved into "aluminium" to match the naming convention of other elements. In 1925 the
United States decided to switch back to the original spelling and pronunciation of the word, at which point we dominated the
aluminum industry. We'd also like to point out that the process of actually producing aluminum was developed by an American
and a Frenchman (not an Englishman).

However, we'd like to thank you for the Oxford English Dictionary. It's an interesting collection, considering that over
10,000 of the words in the original edition were submitted by a crazy American civil-war veteran called Dr. William Charles
Minor.

2. Learn to distinguish the American and Canadian accents, and then we'll talk about the English and Australian accent issue.

3. Review your basic arithmetic. (Hint 100 - 98.85 = 1.15 and 100 - 97.85 = 2.15)

4. If you want English actors as good guys, then make your own movies. Don't rely on us for your modern popular culture. We
liked "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels", "Trainspotting", and "The Full Monty". We've also heard good things about this
"Billy Elliot". But one good movie a year doesn't exactly make a cultural powerhouse. However, you're doing pretty well with
music, so keep up the good work on that front.

5. It's inefficient to have a national anthem that changes its title whenever your monarch dies. Let's not forget that your
national anthem has an extremely boring tune. We suggest switching to that Rule Brittania ditty, it's toetapping. Or maybe
Elton John could adapt "Candle In The Wind" again for you guys.

6. Improve at your national sport. Football? football? This just in: United States gets fourth place in men's football at the
2000 Summer Olympics. United Kingdom? Not even close. By the way, impressive showing at Euro 2000. You almost managed to get
through the tournament without having your fans start an international incident.

7. Learn how to cook. England has some top notch candy. Salt 'n' Vinegar chips are quite yummy. However, there's a reason why
the best food in your country is Indian or Chinese. Your contributions to the culinary arts are soggy beans, warm beer, and
spotted dick. Perhaps when you finally realize the French aren't the spawn of satan they'll teach you how to cook.

8. You're doing a terrible job at understanding cars. The obvious error is that you drive on the wrong side of the road. A
second problem is pricing, it's cheaper to buy a car in Belgium and ship it to England than to buy a car in England. On the
other hand, we like Jaguars and Aston Martins. That's why we bought the companies.

9. We'll tell you who killed JFK when you apologize for "Teletubbies".

Thank you for your time. Yu can now return to watching bad Australian soap operas.

P.S. - Regarding WW2: You're Welcome.

well, that was funny. both the posts. :)

I must admit I recall hearing of this "Belgium" somewhere before....

<sarcasm> perhaps it was the home of Brussel sprouts? </sarcasm> (you see, I know useless trivia, too!)

And I happen to have a professor who's an Englishman, and he enjoys talking to us about sterotypes between
america and britain. I didn't realize that you're so far north that the sun only rises just over the horizon in the winter
for a number of hours?  And to be fair, so long as you are mutally intellegible 99% of the time, it really doesn't matter
if you can't tell a difference between certain dialects because quite frankly australia's english usage wasn't a
complete breakaway that most of american english followed. this talk about languages got me thinking about the
most recent austin powers movie where they talked in, and I quote, "english english" (I swear I used that pun before
they did! :):) ) :)  I at least listened to it and heard the words even if not the meanings of all of them. I enjoyed it...

anyways, mr. bean survived the trip over here mostly, (except for the movie, arguably) and I understand the agony of
people ruining something perfectly good, but sometimes... (rarely) something good comes out of the mishmash... like
all in the family, but that's another story... :)

a funny story about "salt & vinegar" flavored stuff, my uncle was mad that I was eating all the potato chips.. (crisps)
all at once from the bag. so he buys a bag of this thinking I'd be repulsed.. well, I was, that's SOUR!! but I ate it all
and left him scratching his head.. so we went back to the "normal" flavors... and what what you call "real chips" are
usually made with vegetable oil here in the US.  ...not animal fat...

And as for WW2, I'm learning more about it gradually, but I must say that if Britain has to thank anyone, it would
have to be the japanese, 'cuz america sure as heck wouldn't have entered the war at that time without
the "encouragement" :pfff:

and I must protest baseball not being played outside america. It is just that we shoudln't call it the world series if
only america participates in it.

Also, I for one actually like the tune of "God save the queen". particularly since I learned a certain song that went by
that tune back in 1st grade.

better than metric will be accepted. ;) though if you only use a smiley you have to explain why you're being lazy. ;)

You want us to confess to American units (traditional as you call 'em)? :)
Ok...
The inch is probably a very useful unit because we can measure computer monitors with it.
But that's the only useful one.
The others are just plain crazy :)

Examples:

International inch = 2.54 cm
US survey inch =  2.540005080010 cm

Mile =  1,609.344 km (= 8 furlong = 80 chain = 320 rod = 63360 inches)
International nautical mile = 1,852 km
Admiralty nautical mile = 1,853.184 km
=> Does it make sense to have 3 different miles??

Homestead = 1/4 section = 64.7 hectares
Township = 36 sections
=> :lol:

Teaspoon = 4.93 ml
Saltspoon = 1/4 teaspoon
Dessertspoon = 2 teaspoon
=> Well, that's not really crazy but they differ from the official british definitions: british teaspoon = 4.44 ml :)

Sorry freespace, please don't mind! :)

I'm really annoyed with my new maths (math) excersise book at the moment because the squares on the inside are neither metric
or imperial. Either one would be useful, preferably metric because the syllabus runs off metric. I still claim that it's not
my fault that I follow the metric way because I've been brought up in the new generation where only metric is used.

Quote
Although... I notice you used a lot of units that nobody here in the US uses. (chains, rods.. etc.. not used.)

Mmm, true. They are generally no longer used. There are a couple of rare ones I know for some reason. To measue the height of horses you use 'hands' and to measure horse racing tracks you use 'furlongs'. I'm not a horse expert if that's what you're thinking. Even so, it makes sense, if you can measure things in feet then why not hands as well? ;)

Oh LOrd ... Atom is an owned man!! Hasn't talked because he can't get a word in edgewise, except for, yes dear, no dear, I
forgot dear, I'm sorry dear ...

Really free, just what do you mean by traditional units? How far back is traditional?

Maybe we should return to measuring by cubits. How many paces is it from Baghdad to Caracas? How big is GWB's ego (inverse
square to his intelligence)?

In a bar, how do you measure your yard (johnson) by cubits?
Title: Re: [Off Topic] GUPT X
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 10 December 2005, 11:26:14
For me, traditional goes back as far as I've been using that which I have been using (15+ years of feet, yards, and still no cubits), and to a fairly large degree, it also goes back as far as the they've been in use as is. and as like I've said before, old units that haven't been in wide use in hundreds to thousands of years don't count, dammit. :)  It's all about PRACTICAL unit usage. :)

cubits and whatnots are neat to know as trivia. http://www.middletownbiblechurch.org/biblecus/biblec2.htm

but to me are just the same as knowing the metric prefixes beyond 10^+/-12

Sure you've got em but hell, no one uses them except for EXTREME cases. (and indeed, I don't think anyone
uses cubits ever except with the occasional ancient manuscript deconding.)

it's nice to know that the earth is such and such yottograms or whatever it is, and it's cool to know that I'm blahblah
cubits long, but in PRACTICAL use, neither are used for a reason. :)  and that reason is that neither are used in
common-speak. indeed, cubits and whatnot aren't recognized as customary units (I've also commented before that
nobody hardly uses terms even like megagram and megameter before, prefering 1000K of the common unit to
the "correct" term and I'll mention it again.)

I'd also like to point out that I'd never heard of the  "survey" inch before the beginnings of our talks on the subject. I
still don't know what it's used for, (besides perhaps some sort of survey.. duhhhh  .) because we use the
same typical inches (2.54cm) of which a yard has 36 of. and as I understand it, it's been that way since WW1 for all
inch-using countries. So I don't see how the american yard is any different from the british one or anyone elses.

So anyway... all I ask is that nobody here confuses what I call traditional units with impractical ones.

And so I don't get some smartypants response about all traditional units being impractical (the general belief of which
I have no doubt is the source of the confusion) I'm posting my definition of practical:

Quote
prac·ti·cal
1 a : of, relating to, or manifested in practice or action : not theoretical or ideal
b : being such in practice or effect :

Freespace:

My boy, you took a quasi-humourous topic and went serious on us!!!

Really, cubits came before the Hebrew/Christian bible ... construction units used by a little known architect working for a
strange man named Khufu, on the plateau at Giza ... kinda blows out impractical, doesn't it?

Oh, and you missed the referent to "yard". Ask our UK buddies what the old Royal Navy term means wrt personal anatomy.

Whether traditional or not, no system of measurement is impractical, so long as all users are in common agreement as to their
meanings and usages. It is in the conversion between systems that problems arise. Ask Mars Polar Lander.

yeah, yeah..

I wasn't too serious!!

just a bit more than I prob'ly needed to be, (and I know that cubits have been around before the bible, I only used
that page to show how long they were on average.

anyway. I agree w/that pretty much..

I just can't think right now so I'm stopping this post right here. :)

Since you can see the sign on the hill (you're a ways from the beach aren't you?

Don't you just wish:

"They could all be California girls."?

Merry Christmas, Eric.

to be fair, I've been trying other foods..

haven't gotten around to marmite yet, though... ;)

Actually, I was thinking of making a "world food" sandwich. It would definately be one of those like it or hate it things.

I might even make a movie out of it (kinda like those cooking shows you see on TV sometimes) only with humorous
overtones..  . but that would be in the future..

Dansteph (I'm curious as to who will post first bewteen the two of you. )

Freespacian spy satelites have been looking at his last known whereabouts, but sadly, he remains elusive....

Actually, that's pretty accurate. I currently live just accross the railroad and a bit to the E of the spot you marked on
the map. Near that yellowish construction yard. In FACT, I do believe this pic is so old, that the construction site
meanwhile was converted into 3 brand new spanking appartment buildings, in one of which meself resides :top:

Anyway, I'm still around, involved in all sorts of stuff that keeps me away from here... But I win, I beat Dan in
responding first :)

WOW! It was that accurate, eh? (glad to see ya, doc.)

well, I really couldn't help the age of the pic... and actually, as the map I stole was straight from google earth, the city
marker was already in there right near the center. I just zoomed in to an acceptable level wanting that in the pic and
by chance you live in the area of the pic? lol!!

anyway, yeah.. Dan's still wanted for a post in here..

even one or two words will do. :)

current checklist...

A common question, and common theme in SciFi circles. I understand that in several books there is a rumour that a cross brain
transplant was attempted. Both subjects died ...

Alien tissue rejection !!! :D :D

In truth Atom, don't even bother. Read the routine on "The Rules". You cannot fathom it. A further truth (well, belief
actually) is that male and female Homo Sapiens Sapiens are actually two species. Symbiotes, yes, but TWO separate species (we
don't think alike, we don't look alike, we don't talk alike ...  the more I learn about women, the better I like my dog ...)

But then, I think Kipling said it best. Look up: "The Female of the Species is More Deadly than the Male".

If you don't believe, watch two women in a bar fight.

Male chauvinism aside, lol *runs*

my personal experience is: when in doubt, ask. But - don't ask stuff like "Why do I have to apologize?"

Moreover, tackling the brain of your femaile counterpart is a great way to grow as a person. Most people believe they
need noone for that, but it's not true. Ask any (good!) parent if they feel their kids taught them something.. same
goes for partners.

Of course this sort of honest Q&A only works with a person that is truely right for you and vice-versa. If it doesn't
work, ultimately, they aren't right for you.

meh, and doc was worrying about america's state of mind?
