Wasn't it a lil too soon to start a new gupt?

One of those BMWs almost ran me down this morning when I went to work with my bike. :)

Post by: Atom on 29 October 2004, 10:09:27
Well, the other GUPT was loading in blocks, and I said I would start a new one when the old one loaded slowly, maybe it was a
little early? But I don't think there is much we can do now.

Groovy pics guys.

Dang.  I knew I should have started it yesterday......Now Atom nabbed it :)

Well, he DID claim creation rights in GUPT 5 :)

But I smell this sort of thing could get out of hand and we'll be having new GUPTs every day...

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI

No, that won't happen, not everyday, we're not that extreme. It can't happen.

Atom, I'm warning you, remember how ironic the future can be. Now you've just said several times that there will not
be a new GUPT every day, the chances are that there will be.

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 30 October 2004, 11:01:31
I'm sorely tempted to create a gupt 7 right here and now just to prove doc right. :)

Honestly though,  this guptness is getting to be a bit too much for even me. I think mine only lasted a week. :( (atom
I won't forget you for that. ;) )

Not that it's beyond my handling yet. ;) but a person can only take so much off topicness before he goes insane..
forever.. :)

Okay guys, GUPT 7 closed for the moment. Brenton you've made your point and proven mine, so let's put that in the
forum history.

EDIT: I misread the stats.. Make that a 200 post limit. I don't know what figures I was looking at. Probably someone's post count! :) The idea is the same though.

Tell you all what. This GUPT is up at 653 posts (quite a pace!), so I suggest we open the new one when we get to
1000 (200) posts. And if we can agree not to get to "graphic" on the GUPT forums, than this post limit could stay as an informal rule for the future too. Just so we don't make a big deal of it every time :)

Well, I hope you guys enjoyed halloween, even if it was just another day wherever you are. In that, I would like to
say that even though I'm past that stage in my life almost entirely, it seems that it's my uncle's favorite holiday, (and
it suits him well) but anyway, he had a party, and it was with mandatory costumes. Since it was to be held at the
place where I live, It seemed I either had to find some place to go, or just sit it out with a costume.

I got brave and roughed it out. :)

I saw zombies, a cia agent with a skeleton mask, and even a cat!

And of couse yours truely was dressed up as an anime character. I won the most original costume award because
nobody knew who I was.

...except one person. but it wasn't enough to sway the votes. ;)

anyway, it's a sad day when nobody recognizes inuyasha!

(perhaps it's because my hair was stubborn and only turned "old man gray" instead of white. that and the ears were
backward. but that one person who watched anime recognized me right away, so it's obvious that the ratio of anime
watchers and normal people is sadly in the normal person's favor.

Only one thing is certain after all that. my hair is going to be sticky from that hair spray for like a week! at least the
smell of hair spray went away...

If I get over the embarasment, I might give you some pictures...

Atom Says: Haloween was brilliant, I spent this morning wiping an egg off the conservatory roof.

Atom and Krytom ask: Where can we find a decent free downloadable animated GIF creator?

Edit: It's fine, we have a program now. Watch out for some gifs in the future once we get the hang of creating them nicely

hehe, international hollidays lesson:

back here 1st Nov is the Day of the Dead.. it's when families usually go to visit the graves of their ancestors and
generally is a calmer holliday. Until a few years ago Halloween wasn't something we celebrated here (we have our
own version in February), but I guess that too got adopted, just like Valentines.. So appart from the younger
generation, people don't have much of a celebration this time of year :) I wonder how soon until we adopt the 4th
July as well :doubt:

Just thought I'd tell this :)

Cheers,

not the least ironic thing I found concerning orbiter was this:

Free,

BTW: Rome update. I am now the sovereign ruler of Galia, Britannia and Numidia, who have all become extinct, currently engaging Germannia and then probably going to take care of my Roman brethren :)

How do you deal with the shortage of governers? I mean, for one, you build them up, teach them and then after a
few years they die on you of natural causes if nothing else.. Ungrateful lot :)

I passed the Marius reform, so I can now build some advanced units.. Any way of "automatically" upgrading or do you
really have to manually rebuild the army. Build new ones and disband the obsolete units? Or do I just sacrifice them
in the battles?

Emperor Gaius Julius Vidmarianis :)

Post by: freespace2dotcom on 02 November 2004, 09:11:53
Ah, It's been a while since I conquered all of europe and won the game.

I too have a problem wih the lack of governors, but you really don't need them after the point you're at. just keep a
general in your army, and ingore micromanaging your cities. but yes, you will need to rebuild your armies again, but
it's something that your can do gradually. even as I beat the game, I still had a few triarii and principes around. I
never used them, but they were useful in keeping the order in my cities behind the front lines.

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: DocHoliday on 02 November 2004, 10:14:39
Yup, I like principes and triarii.. but civil dissent is kind of a problem unless I have governors. I actually had to move
the capital here and there.. First because of Spanish uprisings which were (mostly) due to distance from capital and
then becaues of ex-Numidian cities that wouldn't stop revolting. :)

Upgrading is going to be a major drag, especially since I don't have the most up-to-date barracks in the frontier
cities.. And I can't recall the units to even upgrade their weapons with the blacksmiths..... I guess I'll have to sacrifice
a few more turns and let a few more governors die of old age :) I have a big family though. I even incorporated some
Gaul and Britton generals :)

And for the sake of proving how cool jets are (as we discussed over email and I'm nowhere near ready to send my
latest q&A email)

look here

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/01/vulcan_for_sale/

and for about $10,000? damn, I want it. :)

(and yes I realize that the current bid is far more than that now)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: DocHoliday on 02 November 2004, 11:03:00
I don't like vulcans.. Them big, flying monstrocities.. They are probably selling it just because it consumes so much
fuel :)

The bid is currently at 2.000.000 GBP :) :badfinger:, so I guess unless you have rougly 3,5 million bucks laying
around, you can kiss it goodbye.

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 02 November 2004, 11:22:37
yes, I know how much the thing is now, I think they're selling it because too many at the airport were intimidated by
it. (and it doesn't even work!)

I'll get me a fighter jet someday, though. :)

I suggest you get yourself Burt Rutan's kit.. don't know what it's called, but I think the price range is about what you

no game can last me over a week... :(

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: DocHoliday on 02 November 2004, 12:28:10
On what difficulty did you play rome? You should try the hardest :)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 02 November 2004, 12:59:45
I play games for the experience, not the difficulty. I'm glad I didn't play the thing on the hardest difficulty. the game
got too repetitive later on for my liking. maybe if you could actually fight the naval battles without the computer auto-
fighting them for you. but I'm effectively done playing that game for a while now. it's almost pointless for me to buy
games because of that trait I have..

maybe I need to log some flight sim hours. I haven't done that for a long time.

any suggestions for planes, doc? (I have ms fs2004)

I'm also big on scenery... ;)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: DocHoliday on 02 November 2004, 14:00:08
Heh, in fact, I'm almost the same in this respect.. Maybe that is why I occasionally actually buy a game and then I
play it as if it's the last thing I ever will. Just my way of getting my money's worth :) Otherwise I just play things on
easiest to see the cutscenes and outros :)

Good planes? If you like a realistic challenge there is a B707 on AVSIM if I'm not mistaken.. It's a big chunk, 40 or so
Megs, can't miss it.. Anyway, it's VERY realistic and still not too hard to fly..

I also found some nice Hercules model someplace, don't have the link on me either :) I remember tere were two
Hercules' on AVSIM. Take the one with the Coast Guard livery, not the Army.. Different authors, the Coast Guard is
better made.

I'm not too big on scenery, so can't help you there :)

Cheers,

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 02 November 2004, 20:16:47
hehe. OK. I'll look them up, but first, I need to clear some HD space up. I got this computer of mine in december of last
year (!) I have two 120 gig HDs, and I barely have 1/8 of that total space on my 6 partitions.

I'm a pack-rat both in real life and computers, and it shows... but what on earth can I get rid of that I won't miss? the
best I can do is move ssome stuff onto a different partition, but most of the stuff (like games) are installed, and the
registry expects them to be on the c drive, (because I prefer them there)

argh..

I'll be thinking up a solution.

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: Krytom on 02 November 2004, 21:41:59
If you want scenery for FS you should consider downloading some of these.

http://www.simviation.com/fsdterrainsrtm.htm

All in all there is over 8.26 GB of scenery mesh. The scenery downloads come in parts (I've only got most of
europe, can't be bothered to download any more). Mountainous scenery is rather nice so I recommend it. :)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: DocHoliday on 03 November 2004, 09:43:27
1/8 is plenty for a few FS addons :)

Krytom, what's the inpact on FPS? I'd love a more vivid Europe too, but I don't want a radical drop in fps.

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 03 November 2004, 10:52:02
yes, yes, but it's all unevenly distributed.

I had to install it on my d drive becasue that was the one with the most space left...

hehe. I want a more vivid world. :)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: DocHoliday on 03 November 2004, 12:02:36
hehe, so what's your take on the elections.. Seems your state neighbours are deciding the odds...

I must say I still don't understand the way presidents get voted in US... popular vote vs. electoral votes??

(Note: This is the GUPT, so consider politics here just another useless subject, not the important tabu it is, heh)

Cheers,

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 03 November 2004, 12:20:11
hehe. It's not that I don't care, but I'm staying away from the madness.

I don't like either of the candidates, and it's only the electorial vote that matters. I think the popular vote is given only
as a method to sway the elctorates a certain way, but nothing more.

personally, I didn't vote. I never registered even though I was given the opportunity to. That's a conscious
choice too, you know. ;) people say I won't have any right to complain this way, but I disgress. if I know I'll be
unhappy with either person, I'll complain even if the guy I voted for wins.

how is that better?

I think both are scumbags and I'm not giving my consent to an evil we simply haven't had before. that won't make our
problems go away.

anyway, if martial law isn't declared or anything crazy like that, my money's on bush. but anything can happen, let's
sit back and watch them run around like chickens with their heads cut off. :)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: DocHoliday on 03 November 2004, 14:20:45
Thanks.. Anyone else? :)

I must say I'm dissappointed, but on the other hand, it's not my country, so I can't really say who's best for the job.. I
am pretty sure Kerry would be better for international image of US though.. not by virtue of who he is, but who he is
not :)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI

My veiws on it are simple,

Kerry's a slimeball and Bush is a dumbass.

I think that the only people that become candidates for the presidential elections are the business slimeballs with tons of
money, I don't trust rich people. Then again I don't trust many people at all. :)

can you develop your position? :???:

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: Atom on 03 November 2004, 22:48:04
Yes I can, in my opinion that people who have enough money to campain endlessly for months and have enough money to buy and
upkeep a Boing 737 of their own must have conned someone, he's a business man, a slimeball. As for Bush, yeah he's dumb, but
his administration knows how to make up good stories. The Iraq war was fought on the basis of a lie, the UK (my country)
wasted alot of money on that war, money that could have gone into a money starved health system or other underfunded but
vital services. Not to mention the un-needed loss of life of British service men and women. Then there is the Iraqi casualties.

And the terrorists. The same terrorists that the American government trained, funded and equiped during the war in
Afghanistan against the Soviets. Non of this would be happening if the American government had left Afghanistan and let the
already collapsing Soviet Union collapse naturally.

It all boils down to the American government sticking there nose into business that should be left alone. And now they get
all scared when it comes back bites them.

(I'm sorry to anyone who is offended, if you are, please feel free to prove an opposing point in a sensible and mature way.
This forum does not like political flame wars.)

You know what I would really like to know / see.. The voter election sheet??

I mean, what did that look like. Was it:
- Bush / Kerry?
- choice of senators and congressmen?
- a quizz where you tick off the views you agree with (Ban same-sex marriage, yes/no, .etc)

I mean, seriously, if anyone went to vote, what did that look like? Becuase I saw some election response analysis on
CNN and there were things like how many voters voted for say legalizing marijuana :) Now unless those questions
were on the voting sheet, how else did they get that info?

Cheers,
Janez

Well, I still have my Stub... it pretty much had a listing of about 8 choices for president, with Nader not included here
in California.. Pres/Vice-pres listed together that you select with an Ink-blot pen.
Then, yes, senators and congressmen, followed by a few dozen local electees down to administrative law judges.
Then, the propositions, indian gaming tax, social programs (nothing on legalizing pot or same sex marriage), lots of
curiously stated, similar props that you aren't sure will benefit/harm the public at large.  But there wasn't really much
to support the democratic mythos this year, really.  I was hoping for a lot more important topics on my ballot.

Anyone know of a virus that switches off Norton's Auto-Protect thingy? And makes videos and games real jittery, basically it
kills the system, and slowly gets worse.

I know this sounds real whiney, but getting spat at on the bus, then coming home to a PC that won't work properly, it just
ruins an already bad day.

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 19 November 2004, 20:11:31
it doesn't sound whiney. but yeah. if you need help, I can try. what you need to do, is to update your virus definitions
to the most recent update, (ideally, manually and not let your PC "autoupdate" itself for you)

go here and download the update executable for your version of antivirus:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html

and do a full scan of your HD. generally, most virii hang out in the root directory, the windows directory, or
somewhere in the program files directory. I get lazy and impatient, and so scan only those while "on patrol" but if you
suspect something, then wait for the whole thing to come through.

(listen to me say "directory." :) windows uses folders. but alas, my days with dos dictate the habit.)

that's what I did with my computer when I got my scare just a few days ago, and I'll say that I came up with nothing,
so people can be a bit... paranoid... :)

I'm a power user, so I do get into a bit more than I can chew sometimes. but it's fun all the way around. I might even
suggest that you reinstall windows anyway. that way you get a fresh install without all the crap it tends to aquire
over the time we use it, which will remedy your problem even if a virus isn't at fault.

the only problem is most people don't want to go to the effort of doing something like that. (myself included, though I
won't avoid it if I think it's necessary.)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 19 November 2004, 21:39:42
Dos *is* cool, but it's older than I am, so I tend to think it's a tad outdated. ;) Any windows user had better know the
basic dos prompt commands just to fend off ignorance.

anyway, I like to stay with the "in" crowd, and they new generation are all calling them folders now.

as weird as it is, I like saying directory.

Atom and I have made a remarkable discovery (actually Atom was the one who found it). Guess who made this:
And this:
And this:
These were made by me, yes, me. But I had the help of a very good program called:

Terragen

http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/

Download it. It's quite easy to learn how to use the program.
These are images that aren't best quality because I scaled them down from 1024X768.
Oh and by the way, all the images are computer generated. ;) (if you haddn't guessed) :turning:

P.S. sorry for all 56K peoples, if the need for a GUPT 7 arises I will make one.

Thanks Freespace.

And just to point out in bigger letters than before. It was I that found Terragen. So don't let Krytom lead you
astray. Hehe. But, Krytom; looks like you found some spare time last night. Nice renders. I always get kicked off the PC
before it finishes rendering, so I don't have many. I wish I had my own PC, that would be so cool.

Anyway, my word on Terragen. It's a great program, but for brilliant quality (cool) pictures it's quite a long render time.
One of mine was 2 hrs.

Freespacia?!? What kind of a name is that?!
I rock at Sim City (I know I'm being big headed, I havn't been big headed in a long time).
I made a city with around 600,000 population, it goes right up to the edges, there's no room left. I have almost every
landmark and my money's just going up. I'm even giving away rubbish to other cities. I have every kind of airport and
a very nice subway+elevated train system.

yeah, I always have problems with english schoolwork.

all my parents have always said that because I speak the language natively, I should have no problems.

let me tell you that the last class I took on the subject was writing composition. that's FORMAL crap. which is vastly
different to the garbage I speak.

formal writing. surprisingly, I passed it, but I didn't enjoy it one bit. I think it was becasue I liked the professor's
personality. :) (though to be honest my mind has already removed most of what I "learned" there.)

And yeah sim city 4 rocks. all of them do, but 4 the most. the #1 problem I have though, is I always run a deficit early
on, and by the time I have a decent income, the weight of my loans crush me before I can pay them off.

And what's wrong with naming a city freespacia? alexander the great named all his cities alexandria. it's a vanity
thing, so leave me be. ;)

hehe, this one is old, but it's still my favourite :)

The European Union Commission Aviation Sub-committee has just announced an agreement whereby English will
be the official language of the EU, rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Civil Aviation Authorities conceded in a meeting held in
Strasbourg earlier this month that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5
year phase-in plan that would be known as "EuroGlish". This plan is to take effect on 01 Jan 2005 at
midnight.

In the first year, "S" will replace the soft "C". Sertainly, this will make the sivil german pilots jump
with joy. The hard "C" will then be dropped in favor of the "K". This should klear up konfusion and
komputer keyboards on the flight management systems kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the second year, when the troublesome "PH" will be replaced
with the "F". This will make words like "fotograf" or "filosofy" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akceptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more
komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters, which have
always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "E's" in
the language is disgraseful and they should go away.

By the 4th year, peopl wil be reseptiv to such steps as replasing "TH" with "Z" and "W" with "V". During
ze fifz year, ze unesesary "O" kan be droped vrom vords kontaining "OU" and similar changes vud of kors be
aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli zenzibl riten shteil! Zer vil be no mor trubls und difikultis und

hehehe, well I guess if English is your native language this sounds awful..

BUT, a lot of Germans I know actually speak like that.. French have their own version of heavy accent (some more,
some less of course), so basically this kind of talk would be nothing new to me :) And frankly if EU has to use English,
it would be nice to use a version that is distinguishable from US English, just for the heck of it :)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 23 November 2004, 09:03:21
Yes, yes. I have no problem with that. It's not really the sounds that changed, but merely spelling, which is a
nightmare for me to understand. actually speaking-wise, I can understand fairly heavy accents from many languages.
I think that that's partially because the university I go to has so many exchange students. :)

Eh, what are you on about? :)

Free: Well XP is rather user friendly, and tends not to crash, but that still doesn't make it supremely better than
win98 :) the more patched and updated your download, the slower it will run.....

I will admit, the only reason why I use it, is because it has zero problems with LAN and USB gizmos :) Otherwise I too
would probably still stick with 98 :)

I went from 98 to 2000 very hesitantly. I would have an install of 98 on my computer if only I had drivers for the
hardware...

I'll only use xp as a main OS after 2000 is as old as 95 is now, or until it outlives it's lifetime with drivers like 98
happened with me.

After I wear XP out, I'm probably going to go to linux. by that time, I hope it'll be a bit more friendly to ex-windows
users. ;)

(I'd go to linux faster if they actually had tons of games developed for it... :( )

Methinks Linux is more for servers than mainstream personal computing.

Windows and MacOS are probebly the only decent operating systems around for gaming/general computing
I suppose Linux would be OK for an office computer, as it comes with all the bells and whistles that you need to pay
extra for with M$.  Mind you, I'm a bit MS-biased becuase they make the Flight Simulator series :)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI

hehhe, agreed. I'd go to Linux as well if there was a "reward" in it :) Besides, I hear Linux is only simple to install and
use if you're happy with the basic options (whatever they may be).. But if you're more specific, you need to dig into
like a hundred config files.. So I keep putting it off: "I'll deal with linux when I have a free week".. And I never do :)

Good stuff Krytom! :) (in spite of hearing it using my crappy sound card at work with lousy MIDI instruments)

What software did you use to make it?

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI
Post by: DocHoliday on 03 December 2004, 09:17:30
Are you familiar with more advanced composing software?

Years ago, I was also making a little bit of music, but my results were limited by my musical talent alone, as I have
almost zero musical education. Anyway, back then we used programs like ScreamTracker. Now the advantage of this
kind of software is that you compose music in a similar manner to MIDI pieces, yet you can use sampled instruments.
You can sample any instrument/sound/effect you like. This gives you a lot more flexibility over MIDI as the resulting
piece is heard the same on every machine, while MIDI depends on the hardware of the user...

Nowadays though, this software has gone to actually being able to produce CD-type music, converted to mp3, so it is
uneditable. I have a sample here for you and I believe with your talent and knowledge you could easily do something
like this. Worth exploring in my opinion:

http://orbiter.vidmar.orv/Glyn_R_Brown-Gordian_Tomb_Adventures.mp3
this on is also excellent:
http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/1356/Glyn%20R%20Brown%20-%20Firelord%20-%20Symphonic.mp3
Glyn R Brown is my favourite. Tons of similar stuff here at:

Sibelius 3 is the software I used. It says so in my post. I am quite sure that there is no composing software out there
better than it at the moment. It's top of the range and is used by publishers and top composers, and students ;).
The program comes with a scaled down version of Kontakt audio samplings so I don't have to use MIDI.
Unfortunately the site has to use MIDI.

About the piece being 'down'. F Minor was the key picked at random by myself when I started composing the piece.
You can change the key yourself using the Scorch plugin. F# minor might actually be a better key for the bass guitar
but the saxaphonist might be a little upset.

BTW: :badlink: I can't seem to access your mp3s for some reason.

It's in German, but the rules are simple. Turn the arrows at crossroads to send the packages to their matching
transportation (colors must match). If the arrow is gray it cannot be moved. You have to do deliver the packages in a
certain amount of time otherwise you fail. Obviously making to many mistakes will waste time. You can have the
arrows form a loop, so you can have the packages circle around until your figure out where each one goes, but mind
the clock :)

Wow! 8o That firework factory really put on a show. That camera man took a bombardment. I wonder why he had a
camera the very moment the factory caught fire, mmmmmmmm, do I smell a conspiracy, or is that gunpowder?......

hey hey HEY!!!

Lookit what game freespace just got. 8o

heheheheheheheheh! :)

Here I am giving a good broadside to a French merchant vessel.

shortly after they had no choice but to surrender, lest they join the many others I've sent to davy jone's locker. ;)
poor pricks never had a chance either, but they got what they deserved after waging war with England. (well, to be
fair, it was actually an english ultimatum to the french that caused this conflict, but why nitpick over details?) And
everyone knows that freespace always sides with England in such scenarios. ;)

harr harr harr! :)

Here, I had to stop an invasion force of a good number of men. I couldn't win with manpower, (They had 4X more
than me) so I just kept my distance and pelted them. This battle lasted until twilight, but in the end, they sank, and
all hands were lost...

Oh well... At least I got rewarded for creating that loss.... :)

here, I found a small smuggling ship, and our crew's numbers were about equal. my only regret was not being able to
use a katana in these duels, but.. *shrug*  you can't get your way all the time.

In fact, unlike this game's predecessors, you can't choose between a rapier, cutlass, or longsword... which sucks... (I
would have used the heavy cutlass always, just out of spite to simon.) But anyway, I won the duel, and captured the
ship.. along with over 500 gold pieces. (yay!) along with several non-metric tons of spices! and who says war can't be
profitable?

well, there's more to the game than that, but it's only blowing the crap out of things, and getting money for it that got
me interested. the dancing (yes, dancing..) part of the game never really struck it off with me..

I was, but after seeing some more of the ship graphics this one is still better:

I have an older version called Sea Dogs.. You can even walk up and down the ship while out of port.. also you can
walk in the town, not just choose your location. Granted it's useless, but still adds to immersivness. However sid
meier's seems to have better graphics overall.

Seems similar to an old game called Cutthroats. Once, in that game, I installed a pirate governor, and shortly
afterwards he gave me a quest to kill his cousin, because "he was going to tarnish the family name by becoming a
pirate"

andyman: hehe, the old games definitelly had better stories :) in Sea Dogs there are multiple stories, but none are
really elaborate like that.. :)

heh, the Japanese have been stuck on their island for too long, so they are rather naive and to privacy-loving now :)
As for French, yup, they CAN be a little... unforgiving and direct in telling you, you don't speak the language well
enough. Paris might be slightly worse in that, as the people living there are probably sick of tourists, especially big-
eyed, ignorant ones :)

I've experienced it myself, but I understand it and don't take offense, I just try harder to speak better, but I can see
some other people might get seriously discouraged to further deal with the French :)

Mental note: :)

When I actually travel the world, and find myself in france, say absolutely nothing and blend in by wearing a beret
and alternating red-and-white striped shirt. :)

( I must confess, the grey one looks rather stylish, no? :) )

This is EXACTLY how to attract attention of the worst kind of xenophobes :)

like wearing a heavy, white, home-knit, "I-Love-Norway"-inscribed sweater over in Norway :) they will immediatelly
know you're a tourist.

That is EXACTLY why I would do it. :) (If I indeed would do it.)

that way most people would leave me alone to do my thing.

IF and only IF you are able to talk some smooth French with some luxurious cursewords for backup :)

Title: Re: [off-topic] GUPT VI

Well, I'm sure I can learn curse words.

They are the first words in any language that people learn, after all. ;)

and I'm sure I could memorize a few key phrases that discourage communication....
