GUPT FAQ Part 1:

Q: WTF is the GUPT?

A: The GUPT is the "Grand Useless Post Thread". It's traditionally opened by the forum member McBrain.
It's reserved for useless post only.

Q: Can I post useless pictures here?

A: Please post pictures only if you think it's badly necessary.

uploaded somewhere.

It's not uploaded yet. It's a pic from my site. Look at the "News" section.

It'll be part of a bigger addon I'm planning: Mars 2100

In response to Doc's last post in the now defunct GUPII, after a lot of effort I found the addon he refered to. Yuck! I
don't like the rainbow "magic" (?!?) shuttle I don't really like the colour pink all that much.

My FAB1 was an act of 'homage' to the Thunderbirds by basing the repaint on Lady Penelope's rolls.

Point. But as you yourself noticed, people who rock the boat are usually pushed off. Often even by their compatriots..
There is such a thing as Ohm Law for the people. If you want to make change, agitating isn't enough, or rather cuts
the efforts short. Changes happen with slow and careful planning and acting. Something we young people try to
bypass. Something I've noticed even young nations as a whole sometimes try to bypass. IT would be nice if it
worked, but it doesn't. The resistence to change is greater than the resistence to the powers at be.

Hehe, socialist :)

Title: Re: [off topic] GUPT III
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 08 July 2004, 13:50:09
I am SO not a socialist! :)

I believe in a system where money is used as an influence to make people work harder.

if you make everybody work as their abilities let them but pay them equally, then the more talented people will
become lazy and not work as hard. that's human nature. It's too bad that the american system is more socialist than
most people think.

After all, what is SOCIAL security?  I looked up socialism in the dictionary and got:

Quote
Main Entry: so·cial·ism
Pronunciation: 'sO-sh&-"li-z&m
Function: noun
1 : any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration
of the means of production and distribution of goods

Is not social security a method of (the government) taking money from those that work and giving it to old people
that can't? That sounds like they have quite a system going. eh? How many people knew this?

there's a big difference in my way of thinking and that of a socialist.

I took a test on a political compass site once, and I was almost entirely neutral on their chart. neither liberal nor
conservative,. etc, etc. I answered the questions honestly and I am very pleased that it turned out that way.

I probably seem like a socialist to a capitalist and vice versa.

*sigh*

Title: Re: [off topic] GUPT III
Post by: DocHoliday on 08 July 2004, 14:32:41
I know, so do I. In some things I believe in total autocracy, say wartime (national defense ONLY! - I don't promote
conquests), other times nothing else but democracy is acceptable. As far as economic systems go, both capitalism
and socialism/communism have their flaws. With one major difference you pointed out. Capitalism is much more
aligned to the nature of humans. While socialism requires certain character qualities which most of us don't have or
rather cannot stick to. Yet. Capitalism alone on the other hand, has no real mechanisms (or rather dismisses the
issues) to protect nature, people who (for no fault of their own!) cannot function as well as others and cannot really
push forward projects that have a humanitarian benefit, rather than material... Take NASA and X-prize. X-prize would
never be possible if NASA didn't lay the foundations. And NASA would never be possible if capitalism alone would
govern its creation... meaning profit, not national interest in this case. That's why governments are needed and so
important in the regulatory sense.

A combination of the two would be good, but how to set it up the mixture is the challenge. I guess the system you
have is an attempt of that. The one we have is another... I have a few theories that might solve it, but it requires
radical changes of mentallity and big costs that would never be returned as such. Neither of those are currently
acceptable :) I'm not even sure I would be able to follow my own rules :)

I guess these things can't be stuffed into the same can. I guess that the american definition of socialism, in your
dictionary, would actually differ from the one in a UK or our dictionary. That's how dumb it all is. I guess the true
definition would be, that socialist systems are socius (society) oriented, while capitalist systems are capital oriented.
How it actually turns out depends on the people, technology and mostly on their leaders.

But we go astray. Mail me if you wanna kick dirt further on the topic ;)

Cheers,

It's nasty here. I have to register for classes today and it's just beginning to rain. :(

I suspect by the lighting of the clouds and the ominous winds it's going to last for a while.

It's 73 degrees here though. (remember, I'm not metric ;) ) very tolerable, although my body prefers something in the
60's for room temp. :) the rain should fix that.

Sorry to "dampen" your spirits. :pfff:

AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh rain, rain, rain , rain  here COOOL :)
Our garden's grass is burned due to the lack of rain since may... now it's raining since
two day, I hope it will rain like this a long time.

20°C here... (remember I'm metric, the only logicall system :)

here a view of our pity grass totally burned.... (last years we had a lot of tomatoes from garden
this years there is only 10-12 and they are still green, see how they are still small even in july)

Hehe.. I might learn how to convert numbers to and from metric but it'll be a LONG time before I use them for good. (If
ever)

Humans aren't logical. Mr. Spock can tell you that. Metric doesn't suit us. :)

At least it doesn't suit me. ;)

Sorry to hear about your tomatoes, but I have a more depressing story actually, We had some company over at our
house just today, and some madman going insanely fast in a car turned the corner of the street without braking,
and rear ended another car. as a result, the two cars went out of control and damaged several others most of which
were the cars that belong to our guests. :( In fact, the damage occured entirely where WE usually park our cars, and
it's just crappy that it happened. Of course I was taking a nap when it happened and missed the whole thing. The
guy responsible took off running like lightning, and From what my brother said, the owner of one of the cars that got
damaged, (not one of our company) pulled out a gun and chased him. crazy world we live in, I wish I could have seen
it. It would have been like in the movies. :)

Here's some pics. taken about an hour ago. sorry about the resolution, I cut the size by half but I didn't realize that they're still huge. One car crashed into a tree in the park that's right across the street from our house. If it hadn't been stopped by the tree, it would have rammed into one of our cars!

The picture above is exactly why I want a real car made of steel, and not a puny fiberglass one that breaks if you touch it. granted steel probably would have gotten damaged too, but I wouldn't have to replace the whole fricking door!

Title: Re: [off topic] GUPT III
Post by: freespace2dotcom on 10 July 2004, 09:28:24
hehe. I don't know about that. Insurance is expensive... But I'm sure that the responisble guy will need insurance
when he's caught, becasue it's quite likely that he'll be the one paying for it. :)

seriously though. we tried to flag a few police cars that passed by the area, but they just ignored us and kept going.
When the first police car finally responded, and we told him about the others who ignored us (well over 20 minutes
after it happened) The officer said, (And I'll never forget this) "Hey, what can I say? This is Chicago...."

But actually, the guy in question was a black guy wearing a white shirt from what I heard my uncle say. It's even
possible that the guy stole that car that rammed into everything. so he may prove hard to track down... :(

I will be gone until the evening of Sunday 18th of July. I will be leaving my house at about lunch time.

There's a 1/2 chance that I'm going on tour next year aswell, Dance Band, or Youth Orchestra. I'm in youth orchestra
next year, tubas don't do jazz that much. there are 4 top bands in the AMC. I will be in 3 of them. Brass Band,
Concert Band (the one I will be touring with in a few hours), Youth Orchestra and Dance Band (probably the best out
of the lot).

Dan, dude. I so envy you. How dare you live in that wonderful place while I'm stuck on cold, wet, damp, grotty,
cloudy, smelly, British old Britain? Ah well. For the last 3 days I did not enter a single building, all I did all weekend
(plus Friday) was marshel planes and laze around. But this was not 'good' lazin'. This was utterly boring lazin'. Uterly
boring lazin in the rain. But I did enjoy marsehelling all the planes. They were mainly props and allot of them
homebuilts. The name was the PFA Rally. (Popular Flying Asscosiation). Some of you lucky flyboys may have heard of
it.

Char, what was the point in that question? What if this accually turned out to a forum about Orbiter, and that the fact
that you cannot play Orbiter would make you somewhat useless here. Also what if the guys don't want to discuss
their family lives on an open forum? I rest my case!

Oh Freespace and I thought you had such a large vocabulary! ;)
I put larder because
1) English fridges are tiny compared to American ones :(
2) Most of the food that the teenage gannets voraciously devour doesn´t need to be refrigerated, for example
packets of crisps which I understand Americans call chips.
In England chips are hot fried chunks of potato which have nothing to do with France.:)

Sometimes it can be the case, that people for whom english is a foreign language understand english-english better
than americans do.  :wall: I think the phrase is "divided by a common language".

Oh and Freespace :top: you are not totally secluded in your room, you communicate with loads of friends all

ROAR!!!

*freespace rips up dan's carpet and everything else that isn't nailed down*

I am not social. I have no friends!!! I am a jerk I tell you!

:worry:
---------------
ok.. I think I understand now.. so.. in other words.. a larder is kinda like a pantry?

hehe. yeah, potato chips in america are um.. well, I can't really define them very well, but rest assured all I have to do
is say a few brand names.

Lay's, and Pringles. ;)

I understand that they dissappear very rapidly though. I can eat a whole super large bag in a few minutes, seriously.
My favorite kind are the ruffled ;)

*hint* buy the salt and vinegar ones, they'll last longer. :)
I can't stand them and don't know how that flavor even sells.

So I'm assuming that what you call chips are what I would call french fries. (ha! I get the joke. took me a few minutes
to realize it, but I got it... :) )

Boy, this sure is interesting. :)

Of course, in order to be defined as a french fry (in my dictionary, anyway) they need to be in the shape of a stick and have their skin peeled off. If they aren't, then you'd just call them fried potatoes. :)

Since we're talking about potatoes here in the useless thread.. Might I ask how you say potato (and tomato for
that matter)?

Is it with a high or a low "A" sound? I always say it with a high "A".

Hmm.... Low "A" sound? High "A" sound?? What do you mean???

Like low: "Potayeto" (pronounce the "aye" like at the navy) and high: "Poteyto", or what???

See, McBrain? :)

I never actually HEARD anyone say "pot-ah-to" like in "garage" .. So I say potato as potayto :) same with tomato,
although some British tend to prefer tom-ah-to.

I like the way americans (president?) say nuclear though :) not NUC-LEE-AR, but NUK-YOOL-AR. hehehe duh.
Schedule is another interesting example. Some say :SHED-UAL and some say SKED-UAL :)

Title: Re: [off topic] GUPT III

first things first.

Bush says nuclear wrong, and as a result of that, it makes it seem like every american says it wrong. But that's not
true at all.

I say it as "new-clear" just like the president doesn't.

about schedual. I say it just as I say school. And "skool is kool" :)

I say potayto and tom-ah-to (wasn't this in a song?) nuc-lee-ar, shed-ual and for good measure pronounce
lieutenant leftenant not lootenant.

Although a speaker of good "Queen's English" I can't claim that mine is superior to any other dialect in fact I am sure
I read that American vocabulary and pronunciation is often closer to the original 16th century English (ie the one that
the pesky colonists spoke before they rebelled ;))

What is a pomato? I asked :google: and got
Quote
in the early 1980s. Scientists had succeeded in crossing potato with tomato - and they called it pomato -
hoping that it would increase the shelf life of tomatoes. The skin of the tomato would become thicker and that would
mean that housewives would not have to throw over-ripe tomatoes every other day.

La décision de le mettre en service en France vient d'être prise par le gouvernement et le parlement.

Well we English should be pleased.  For some reason we are scared of building more of our own nuclear reactors,
pressurised or not, but what we can do is buy our electricity from France! :friend:

Title: Re: [off topic] GUPT III

And you Freebie-san, can call ME DocHoliday-sama! :)

HEHEHE YES, I forgot lieutenant :)) That is a nice difference too. Where does that word originally come from? My
guess would be french, roughly meaning "The one who is close" although I am not sure what tenant means in French
really... I guess American english pronounciation is closer to its origin actually, but I do understand British would
prefer to prounouce it differently, as historically France and Britain ofter... had "differences" of opinion :) I guess the
british logic in the work would be "the one who is my LEFT hand" :) at least that's what it sound like :)

Okay, here goes my rough translation: correct me if I'm wrong.
Quote
Que pensez vous du nouveau réacteur nucléaire français, l'European Pressurised Reactor ?
What do you think of the new French nuclear reactor, the <you understoond that!>?

Quote
La décision de le mettre en service en France vient d'être prise par le gouvernement et le parlement.
The decision to put it in operation is to be made (soon?) by the government and the parliament.

Quote
La France va sans doute en construire un exemplaire.
This one I am not cure of: France will without doubt construct one ???

Well I didn't know about the reactor until now. How does it differ from the current ones? I assume it is better, but you
are the expert around here. I think you should go ahead and be the first :) :wor: But I hope it won't result in some
kind of 2nd Chernobil... that would really be bad news and bad timing....

I think all this discussion should be taken into the multilingual thread though :) But it's all offtopic anyway.

I have a confession to make, I don't deserve to be a Confirmed Pilot - in Orbiter I am a Useless Pilot :( it
is much more difficult to fly my FAB1 (DGIII) when I don't have Krytom around to help!

Oh well, I suppose the only way to learn is to keep on trying :wall: at least my dgIII seems to miraculously recover
after every mishap, with not a blemish on its pink exterior!

But I warn you, if you come to dock to a spacestation and see a pink DGIII already docked, it would be safest to dock
as far away from it as possible! ;)

Freespace's journal, (AKA rant) July 14 2004.
-------------------------------------

Ah, so I survived my first day of the summer classes. This class was physics, and after reading the the list of material
to be covered this term in the class, I was surprised that most of it was stuff that I had learned a fair bit about.

However......

My teacher reached out into the closet and pulled out the unthinkable!

Metric measuring sticks!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! :worry:

He then began the lecture, and showing how all the metric units fit all so nice together, I got a little sick to my
stomach. metric IS well thought out, I have no doubts about that now. It's even better thought out than I had
originally believed humanly possible. It just means I have hard times ahead in convincing my class that the traditional
system does still work despite what a metric lover would like to tell them... ;) In my favor, the teacher was just going
to talk about how unfriendly the number of feet in a mile was to remember, when I was quick to blurt it out before he
had a chance to finish. I could literally hear the gasps of my classmates sitting behind me. It was clear I was the only
student in the room who had bothered to memorize it. That made my day. :) (5280 feet in a mile, and 1760 yards.
May I remember those numbers forever more.)

Then the teacher went back in that closet and made me mad all over again.

He pulled out 1kg weights! :grrr: how dare he! :worry:

I was most impressed to learn how metric works, but it gave me pains. I'm stubborn, and I don't conform. Yet I
wanna pass my class.. and get that diploma I'm working on... Life is NOT fair!!!! :worry: I'm quite tempted to go to
wherever the next metric day is held and bring my yardstick just to spite them! :grrr:

To be fair, the teacher said that he was teaching us metric because the whole world pretty much uses it now, (I grant
him that...) and he gave examples in both metric and traditional units equally. In fact, I even had known that there
are 2.2 pounds in a Kg, which surprised my teacher.  At least my attempts to deal with the metric in orbiter have met
some success because I was probably the most familiar with both systems in that class besides the teacher.. Which is
sad because I don't really know metric all that well. There is a few people from outside the US that deal with metric
easily because they were raised on it, and they were struggling with the traditional units, so I felt as evenly jipped as
they did. :) I've learned pretty much everything I know of metric from orbiter. So I'm glad that I'm learning it, but that
just means that I have to learn how to use my system all the better. Hopefully we'll get more examples of those next
time class meets.

I don't wanna give reasons for my country to convert to metric. I like being unique.
I know almost all you guys use metric daily, but I view my measuring system just as important to me as my language.

I view metric as I would esperanto. I don't want to learn some newfangled language just because the whole world is
using it. No matter how pretty it looks. It's a matter of principles, and what is a person without principles? Esperanto
was intended to kinda be that in my opinion. a global language made up of pieces from every language.

Title: Re: [off topic] GUPT III
Post by: DocHoliday on 15 July 2004, 09:01:56
I'm sorry Freespace. That must have felt REALLY awful, especially after all the conversation on the subject, we've
already had here..

But hey, I guess you can be one of the few people to master BOTH systems and conversion between them. I mean,
you COULD actually make money charging people for homeworks that dealt with metric excercises,
therefore "keeping them in the traditional realm", and you yourself working on challenge :) hehehehe

But seriously, metric IS very practical and quite frankly I am surprised Americans didn't actually invent it themselves,
or rather be the first to use, practical people as you are. But hey, there are PLENTY more things you can be unique
in.. and not lose the practical aspects while being so... Being a conversion specialist is just one :)

Anyway, deal well with it :) Master the change, do not let the change master you.

Title: Re: [off topic] GUPT III
Post by: DocHoliday on 15 July 2004, 10:27:57
I probably never told you this, but I actually took a few things from Americans, just because I figured them to be
more useful for me:
- about the Fahrenheits and weather you know. I consider them a nice "percentage" measure of temperature on
Earth. Although I rarely use them in practice.
- the other is your calendar system. Now in US a week starts with a Sunday (maybe UK too) at least the calanders
put it on the leftmost place. In Europe we start the weeks with the Monday. Now let me explain the benefit of putting
Sunday as the first day in the week.

It's a mental trick actually. We all know how Mondays are bad and how it's all hectic when the week starts. At least
the people who work will agree. Now Friday is the Lord's day in comparisson :) Saturday is a "free" day mentally
speaking, you can do all you want. Sunday again is sort of grim, because the next day is the cursed Monday again :)

Now, if you put Sunday as your "internal" first day of week, the picture changes somewhat. Now Monday is only the
SECOND day in the week. Sunday is the "bad" one. It was grim before, but now it's actually the first day, so the new
week already started and you might as well suck it in. The good thing about Sunday is, that even though your week
already started, you are still at home, taking things at your own pace.. Preparing for school, work, whatever.

Saturday is now the last day of week, but since Sat is such a cool day in any event, it has enough "credit" so that it
can easily take the damage of being the "grim last day of week" without spoiling it :))) Firday is even more of a
holiday now. Thursday mentally becomes Friday now :) And it never hurts to feel good, especially at work, it affects
the whole atmosphere.. I won't say anything about your work productivity on Friday, but I am sure people work
better if they have fun.

So put Sun as your first day and you might notice a positive change in your life, Doc "the motivational speaker"
Holiday sez :)

There, my thoughts on "making use of other people's good ideas" even thought they may seem unpractical, awkward
or whatever :)

Cheers,

I kinda look at my calandar somewhat like that too. :)

Of course, I'm assuming that by your post, you are inferring that having sunday as the first day of the week
is "unpractical, awkward or whatever" :)

But since you were so nice about it, I'll grant that having the reference point (0 degrees) of celsius at water's freezing
point is a nice thing.

But I still don't like it enough to want to use it. ;)

Well, it's not my opinion, but most Europeans would probably agree. "Sunday was the day God took a day off, it was
the 7th day, so it has to be last in the week, right? :) Furthermore, why split up the weekend.. And why not make the
first day a working day, which is the only kind of day that counts..." --  that sort of arguments would be used, I
presume and they cover christians, hedonists and capitalists.. hehe and you've got yourself Europe :) all the rest in
Europe shouldn't have any special arguments against.

Doc I've put your translation in my sigi - I'll have to trust you that I'm not swearing in Slovenian :)
Mind you geniji = genius kaos=chaos seems to fit! :)

Oh dear, with quite a few european languages I can make a fair stab at guessing roughly

A different language group altogether.. It would be suprising if you understood any words appart from the
international and foreign words, UNLESS you spoke another slav language as well. And you are swearing just as
much as in English with this quote :)

Let me brake it down:
Zgubljenci = Lossers (lost people directly)
pospravljajo, = clean up, tidy
pravi = true, real
geniji = you guessed that
nadzirajo = control, oversee, monitor, handle
kaos. = got that one too :)

I omitted ONLY because comma itself bears the meaning BUT or HOWEVER. Slightly changes the emphasis, but makes
it more direct. Losers clean, a real genious handles chaos :)

There you go, 101 in Slovene

You remember enough Latin to be able to translate something? "Seek thy destiny not, for it shall find you!" ??
hehe

It's the phrase that appears on the back of the american $1 bill, and if I remember correctly, it means that [the all

Shmi: I actually meant it that way:

"The true genius controls the chaos."

Sorry for misunderstanding. :)

My fault, McBrain, I read the german through my preconceptions.  I would be a genius if I could control the
chaos without lifting a finger!

night...

GIMME BACK MY NOSE, whoever has it!!

Not fair. I WAS ready for you this time! I had a BIG longsword ready.. Now I can't show it off :(

Obviously you weren't ready, as you had left thinking all was well even after you had made that comment. As a result,
I have both your nose, and I sharpened one of your bones to make a very fine toothpick. :)

What have I missed? Tell me, TELL MEEEEEEEEE!8o8o8o8o8o8o8o8o8o8o8o8o8o8o

Nah, just kidding. I'm back from tour at last (just a little bit sunburnt :hot: ). I haven't got photos ready yet, I just
need time.
Along with the photos will come the many tales of the goings on during that week.
There are so many posts....so many........ughh! I can't be bothered to read them all, is there anything I should know?
I might scan in my old photo's from last year's tour aswell, maybe do a site for them. I'll have time because school
finishes in a day and a half.

Nice to be back. ;)

On my website you can find another performance that I played the tuba in. This was the Aylesbury Music Centre's
Brass Band playing 'The Downfall of Lucifer' at the National Festival of Music for Youth final. We played in the Royal
Festival Hall (supposedly a very famous place in London) alongside 8 other brass bands from all over the UK.

I used my dad's webspace for this, cos I had no room for it. :)

Damn, that's one chaotic piece of classical music :) Must be really hard to play it, especially in harmony with others :)
Strange rhythm too :)

Strange rhythm?!?! More like several strange rhythms at the same time! About harmony, I don't know how the
composer did it but he managed to make a load of jibberish fit together into a piece of music. It sure is chaotic, on a
grand scale, and is probably the hardest piece that my Brass Band has played. But hey, we got the biggest applause
that I've ever had. :applause: :flower: :applause: :flower: :applause: :flower: :applause:

Yeah, I spent a couple hours watching the flash movies on that site. Time that could have been spent checking the
stupid signature  I put on my skin.. Damn.. :)

It's just rubbing me the wrong way..

Hehe, maybe you got it right. Not all textures are flipped around. My sigi actually didn't need any turning, I got it right
on the first attempt.

But to put your mind at ease, I can check for you. Where did you say it was again?

Cheers,

Inside the ship, on the canopy. Very hard to get a view of that area, so I kinda thought it was subtle...
